José Antonio Serrano Argüelles (born May 17, 1955 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican director , actor , playwright and screenwriter .

biography

Serrano completed a degree in communication at the Universidad Iberoamericana , one of the elite universities in Mexico. He also attended the Royal Weber Academy of Dramatic Art in England and studied at the Odin Teatre in Denmark. He studied with the following directors: Jerzy Grotowski from Poland, Philippe Gaulier from France and Carlos Bosso from Italy. Back in Mexico, he worked on telenovelas (soap operas) for Televisa and TV Azteca and as a director met well-known actors such as Gael García Bernal , Salma Hayek , Chayanne and Angélica Aragón.

He has also directed ten plays including Sexo, pudor y lágrimas , which he wrote himself. In 1999, he turned the piece into a film that became the most successful film of the time (revenue 118 million Mexican pesos or 12 million US dollars exchange rate from 1999). Millions of people watched the film over a six-month period and it won several Ariel Awards from the Mexican Film Academy. This was followed by films such as Lucia, Lucia with the Argentinian actress Cecilia Roth, known from All About My Mother, and El Torzón , part of a series of short films about violence in Mexico City called Cero y van cuatro . Serrano's adaptation of the script by Lucía, Lucía was nominated for the 2004 Ariel Award.
