Chayanne (born June 28, 1968 in Río Piedras ; real name Elmer Figueroa Arce ) is a Puerto Rican Latin pop singer and actor.

Life

Chayanne was born in Río Piedras, a suburb of San Juan . He is the son of Quintino Figueroa, a manager, and Irma Luz Arce, a teacher. When he was a baby, his family moved with him to San Lorenzo. Chayanne has four siblings: Clara, Kenny, Elliot and Emanoel. His stage name "Chayanne", which he adopted at the age of 19, comes from the 1955 western series Cheyenne .

He applied to Menudo in the late 1970s , but was turned away on the grounds that he was too young. His career began in the four-piece music group Los Chicos , through which he became known at the age of 17. In his homeland and other Latin American countries they were very successful and appeared in the television film Conexión Caribe and in a weekly TV show. During his tenure, they released four commercially successful albums.

After disagreements he left the boy band in 1984 and continued solo. In the year of separation he released his debut album Chayanne es mi nombre on RCA Ariola . Sangre latina followed in 1986 . With the decoupled singles Vuelve and Una foto para dos , he had two smaller hits in the Latin charts in the USA. In parallel, he also appeared as an actor in smaller roles in the telenovelas Los niños pueden and Pobre juventud . But it was short-lived and he concentrated again on his musical career. The big breakthrough came after switching to Sony . The first album named after himself contained his first top 5 hit with Fiesta en América in 1987 and a second album followed in 1989 with the title Chayanne and with it his first Latin number one Fuiste un trozo de hielo en la escarcha . In the Latin Pop Albums , the album was the first to reach a top 3 ranking and was nominated for a Grammy Award as one of the five best Latin albums of the year . There was a TV commercial with Chayanne for Pepsi during the award ceremony . It was the first purely Spanish-language spot on one of the major US broadcasters. His video for Este ritmo se baila así won an MTV Video Music Award .

In the following years he established himself as one of the top Latin pop singers. Completamente enamorados (1990) and El centro de mi corazón (1992) were further number 1 hits, the associated albums Tiempo de vals and Provócame also achieved top spots. After his separation from his long-time manager Gustavo Sánchez, it became musically a little quieter around the singer, who continued to publish regularly. In 1994/95 he returned to acting and played himself in a leading role in the TV series Volver a empezar . He also played leading roles in the films Linda Sara (1994) and Dance with Me (USA 1998). It was his most successful time as an actor, even though he repeatedly appeared in more or less major roles in television series until the late 2000s, including two episodes of the US series Ally McBeal .

In 1998 the musical comeback came with the ninth album Atado a tu amor . It was his first album to go gold for half a million copies sold. It also earned him a second Grammy nomination and his fourth number 1 hit Dejaría todo . The follow-up album Simplemente was similarly successful two years later, again with a Grammy nomination and the number 1 hit Yo te amo . In 2001 he contributed the song Donde va tu sueño to the Spanish soundtrack of the film Atlantis - The Secret of the Lost City . The success was once again exceeded in 2002 by Chayanne's best-of album Grandes éxitos , which made it to number 1 on the Top Latin Albums for the first time and also entered the official album charts . This was followed by three number 1 songs in a row with Y tú te vas , Un siglo sin ti and Cuidarte el alma . The last two belonged to the album Sincero , which was released a little later . It was his third studio album in a row and his fourth overall with a Grammy nomination. The award was again denied to him.

The successes continued through the 2000s into the 2010s. Cautivo (2005), No hay imposibles (2010) and En todo estaré (2014) were number 1 albums three, four and five in the Latin charts and came up to number 23 in the official charts his first live album Vivo in a 24-year career , recorded in the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires . Si nos quedara podo tiempo was his ninth single number 1 hit in 2007. After 2014, however, he did not release a studio album or new solo singles. Instead he worked with Wisin and Ozuna on two songs in 2017/18 . During his career, he released over twenty albums and sold more than 30 million CDs worldwide.

Chayanne is married to Marilisa Maronesse, who took part in the Miss Venezuela election in 1988 , and has two children. You live in Miami .
