action

In 1914, the young scientist Milo Thatch firmly believed that the legend of the sunken city of Atlantis was true. His grandfather, who raised Milo after his parents died, was already looking for Atlantis. According to his assumptions, the way to Atlantis can be found in the 'Book of the Shepherd', which Milos' grandfather assumed was in Ireland. However, Milo discovered a translation error during his research and is therefore certain that the book can be found in Iceland. He works in the boiler room in a museum in Washington DC, but cannot convince the museum management of his theory.

When he returns to his apartment late in the evening, frustrated, he finds the pretty but intimidating Helga Sinclair, who takes Milo to her client. Mr Whitmore, a billionaire entrepreneur and old friend of his late grandfather, offers Milo to finance his expedition to Atlantis because he wants proof of the Atlantis theory. He hands Milo a present from his grandfather, which Mr. Whitmore should keep for him until Milo is 'ready'. It is the shepherd's diary that his grandfather found in Iceland.

For the expedition to Atlantis, Mr Whitmore has already put together a team of experts that Milo should complete as a cartographer and linguist . The crew already accompanied Milo's grandfather on the expedition to Iceland.

In addition to Commander Lyle Rourke and Lieutenant Helga Sinclair, it consists of the Hispanic machine technician Anna, the Italian demolition expert Vincenzo "Vinny" Santorini, the French geologist Budelaire, the American cook Cookie Farnsworth, the doctor Joshua Sweet and the communications technician Mrs Packard.

At first, Milo is an outsider in the team, the other expedition members make fun of him. Later, however, he succeeds in being accepted by everyone.

As the group approaches the entrance to Atlantis in the ultra-modern Ulysses submarine , it is attacked and destroyed by a Leviathan, which turns out to be an Atlantic war machine, so that the team has to go to rescue submarines. Most of the 200 participants lose their lives. When, after a long, adventurous search, led by Milo and the Book of the Shepherd, the survivors succeed in finding the sunken city, Milo meets Kida, the Princess of Atlantis, and falls in love with her.

The expedition members are surprised to find out that the people of Atlantis are fluent in each of their mother tongues. You will be warmly welcomed by the Atlanteans and especially by Princess Kida and introduced to Kida's father, King Kashekim. However, he is not happy about the intruders and asks them to leave Atlantis the next day.

Kida, on the other hand, defies her father's will and seeks out Milo to speak to him. From her, Milo learns that the civilization of Atlantis is threatened with extinction because the Atlanteans have lost the knowledge of their own culture and are unable to read the ancient scriptures. Milo also learns that the crystal extends the life of the alanter and that Princess Kida is around 10,000 years old. Kida also shows Milo an Atlantic plane that can be activated with the crystal, which Kida was unable to do. With Milo's help, she finds out how the device works. Together they are now trying to find out everything about the heart of Atlantis , a large crystal that thinks for itself. Milo deduces from ancient Atlantic records hidden in a lake that the people of Atlantis cannot survive without the crystal.

When Milo and Kida return from their dive, the rest of the crew are waiting for them. The expedition team turns out to be a mercenary troop whose only interest is the theft of the crystal. They take Milo and Kida prisoner and seriously injure the king. By chance, Rourke discovers where the crystal is hidden. He enters the room with Lieutenant Sinclair, Milo and Kida. The crystal reacts to Kida, which fuses with it and becomes a crystal itself. The mercenaries lock Kida in a transport capsule and want to leave Atlantis. However, Milo is able to convince Anna, Vinny, Budelaire, Cookie, Sweet and Mrs. Packard that the life of the Atlanteans is worth more than the crystal. But Rourke and Sinclair are not dissuaded from their plan and leave Atlantis together with the imprisoned Kida. The further they move away, the weaker the crystals of the remaining Atlanteans become.

Before his death, the decrepit and injured king tells how long ago he used the crystal as a weapon for war. But the crystal developed its own consciousness and its power was so strong that its power struck back and a huge tidal wave approached Atlantis and threatened to destroy it. The crystal then formed a protective dome over the city. Kida's mother was accepted into the crystal at that time, as the crystal always chooses a host of royal blood when danger threatens to protect itself and Atlantis. If the host is fused with the crystal for too long, it becomes part of it.

Milo is determined to save Kida, and with it Atlantis. The Atlanteans, who are now able to use their aircraft thanks to Milo, go into battle with him and the remaining expedition members.

Commander Rourke and Co-Commander Helga Sinclair lose their lives in a joint fight against the rest of the expeditionary force. A huge volcano erupts in an explosion at the gates of Atlantis and threatens to bury the city under the lava. The group managed to get the transport capsule to safety with Kida just in time. Kida activates the power of the crystal again and from the sea surrounding the island rise titans made of stone, which form a protective wall around Atlantis.

The crystal releases Kida again. In her hand she also holds a bracelet, which her mother once slipped from Kida's wrist when she herself became part of the crystal.

Unlike the others, Milo decides to stay in Atlantis and not go back. As proof of the existence of Atlantis, Mr Whitmore receives one of the small crystals that the inhabitants of Atlantis wear around their necks.
