Cap and Capper 2 - This is where the music plays

Cap und Capper (original title: The Fox and the Hound ), originally published in Germany under the title Cap und Capper - Zwei Freunde auf Acht Pfoten , is an American cartoon by the directors Ted Berman and Richard Rich from 1981. The film is the 24th full-length Disney cartoon and tells the story of the friendship between a fox named Cap and a dog named Capper. It is based on the novel fox track - story of an enmity (original title: The Fox and the Hound ) by Daniel P. Mannix . In 2006 the sequel Cap and Capper 2 appeared - this is where the music that was produced directly for the video and DVD market plays. This takes place in the childhood of the two main characters.

action

When hunters are out in the woods, a female fox brings her only pup to the old widow Tweed's farm, where it is safe before she herself falls victim to a hunter's rifle. The owl Big Mama, who watched everything in shock, takes care of the orphan like a grandmother, but cannot take him in. At your request, the two clumsy birds Dinky and Boomer widow Tweet draw attention to the little fox. She calls him Cap and adopts him.

Time goes by and Cap is finally a fun-loving little fox boy. Around the same time, the hunter Amos Slade, Tweets neighbor, gets the little hunting dog Capper, whom he wants to train because his previous dog boss is slowly but surely getting on in years. Boss is supposed to be Capper's teacher.

Cap and capper get to know each other and get on really well with each other right away. They soon become very best friends. But their friendship is not a good star, as Capper is to be trained as a hunting dog and Cap will therefore be one of his prey in the future. In addition, Amos Slade and Widow Tweed can't stand each other.

When Cap and Capper accidentally wake up Chef, Chef Cap chases across the yard, making Slade his mortal enemy. After Cap escaped the hunter on whose farm he was hanging around, he quarreled with Tweed and now wants to shoot the fox. When the hunting season begins, Slade drives his dogs into the forest, on the one hand to hunt and on the other to train cappers. It is very difficult for Cap and Capper to say goodbye on both sides. Big Mama comforts Cap and explains that Capper will come back as a hunting dog and kill others. Due to their friendship, however, Cap is sure that Capper will not harm him.

A few months later, Cap is an adult fox. One day Slade comes back with his dogs. His focus is now on Capper, who is now even a better hunting dog than Chef, who is no longer the youngest. Boss is jealous, but Slade explains to him that while Capper hunts better, he is still not written off. Cap notices this and visits Capper at night. Capper is very happy to see them again, but thinks that the days of their friendship are over since he's now a hunting dog. He advises Cap to run away before Boss wakes up. But that's exactly what happens and Cap has to flee again. Slade takes on the chase with Capper and Chef.

Cap hides and is discovered by Capper, who lets him go because of their former friendship. Cap escapes onto a railway bridge, pursued by the boss. There it comes to a catastrophe: a train crosses the bridge and hits Boss, who, seriously injured, falls down. Capper blames himself and swears to Cap to kill him. Widow Tweed, who in the meantime has noticed the hunt, looks for Cap and is relieved to find him unharmed in the forest. She takes him home with her, but Slade, furious, is soon on her doorstep and demands Cap's surrender, as Boss almost died because of him. Tweed, however, firmly casts him off. She realizes that she can no longer take care of Cap and to protect him from the hunter she takes him to a nature reserve, which is very difficult for her.

In the presence of Big Mama, Dinky and Boomer, Cap settles in there over time and finds his great love in the beautiful vixen Trixie. Both become a couple. But Cap is not safe there either. Slade disregards the hunting ban and lays traps for Cap. Cap and Trixie can avoid the traps and there is a dispute between Cap and Capper, in which Cap succeeds in inflicting pain on Capper with a bite, which stops him briefly so that he can flee with Trixie.

They flee into the building, but have to leave it when Capper digs for them and Slade sets a fire. They get out and flee. But then Amos Slade goes from hunter to hunted when a huge bear is startled by the hunt and attacks Slade, who accidentally steps into one of his traps and cannot reach his rifle. Capper tries to help his master, but has no chance against the huge animal. Cap and Trixie get it. Since he does not want to let his former friend die, Cap turns back, saves Capper's life and attacks the bear.

He lures them onto a tree trunk in front of a waterfall. The bear accidentally smashes the tree trunk and both fall down the waterfall, Cap surviving but the bear perishing. Capper finds the weakened Cap and stops Slade from shooting him, as Cap previously saved him. However, because of the hunter-prey thing, Cap and Capper can no longer be friends. But since they have recognized that friendship can be stronger than external constraints, they reconcile and say goodbye to each other. Widow Tweed treats Slade's injured leg and their relationship improves a lot, which Capper and Boss, who is also feeling better, observe. Satisfied, Cap takes one last look at Capper before he goes on his way again with Trixie.

  • In the original American version, cap and capper have different names. Cap means death and capper means copper.
  • For the German video release in 1995, some speakers had to go back to the studio. The name Vixie was exchanged for Trixie in order to avoid associations , whereby the actual name referred to vixen , English simply for vixen . When the DVD was first released in 2001, however, Vixie was mistakenly used again. The Blu-ray now has the "more appropriate" version again, namely that of the VHS.

criticism

“A rather conventionally designed cartoon [...] In its calm and closeness to nature, a lot in the film is reminiscent of ' Bambi '. A sympathetic, if less memorable film with a strong moral call for more understanding, peacefulness and insightful cooperation. "
