Paul Winchell (* 21st December 1922 in New York City as Paul Wilchin ; † 24. June 2005 in Los Angeles ) was an American comedian , actor , ventriloquist and inventor .

Life

Winchell studied medicine at Columbia University . From 1950 to 1954 he hosted the television program The Paul Winchell Show on the US television station NBC . From 1965 to 1968 he hosted the children's television series Winchell-Mahoney Time . His ventriloquist dummies made him very popular on television in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. As an actor, he was in guest roles in various television series, including as murder victim Henry Clement in 1964 in the Perry Mason episode The Case of the Nervous Neighbor and as Homer Winch in the television series The Beverly Hillbillies in 1962. Until 1989 he was the original voice of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh .

In addition to his work as a ventriloquist, he is considered a co-inventor of the artificial heart . Winchell was first married to Dorothy Movitz, second to Nina Russel (1961–1972) and third to Jean Freeman (1974–2005).
