Pavlo Olegowitsch Ishchenko ( Ukrainian Павло Олегович Іщенко ; born April 30, 1992 in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky , Russia ) is an Israeli boxer . For the Ukraine , he was 2013 European Champion in the lightweight .

Pavlo Ishchenko was born in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Russia, and grew up in Kherson, Ukraine . Due to the war in Ukraine , he moved to Israel in 2014 and also lived in the United States for two years . His father is of Jewish descent.

Career

Pavlo Ishchenko started boxing as a teenager in Kherson. His most important trainer was his father Oleg. At a height of 1.70 meters, he always started in the light weight classes. He was a participant in the 2009 European Youth Championships in Poland and the 2010 World Youth Championships in Azerbaijan , where he was defeated in the first fight against Joe Ham and Artur Bril .

In 2011 he was Ukrainian champion in bantamweight and in 2012 also in lightweight, where he also managed a victory against Mykola Butsenko . In 2012 he took part in the European Olympic qualification in Trabzon and defeated Aram Awagjan , Veaceslav Gojan , Bashir Hassan and Dennis Ceylan . He had thus qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London , but lost there in the first fight against Joseph Diaz .

In 2013 he won the gold medal in the lightweight at the European Championships in Minsk , after beating Sean McComb , Gytis Vaitkus, Charles Flynn, Dmitri Poljanski and Wasgen Safarjanz . He also boxed for the Ukrainian Otamans in the World Series of Boxing .

In 2015 and 2016 he played three victorious professional fights for a US promoter, two of them in the US. He then boxed under the Israeli flag and became the Israeli lightweight champion in 2017 and 2018. He also competed for this country at the 2017 European Championships in Kharkiv , defeating Răzvan Andreiana , Wasgen Safarjanz and Otar Eranossian , losing to Gabil Mamedow in the semifinals and thus winning a bronze medal in the lightweight. He had thus also qualified for the 2017 World Championships in Hamburg . There he defeated Shan Jun in the preliminary round, but lost in the round of 16 against Dordschnjambuugiin Otgondalai .
