The 19th men's boxing world championships took place in Hamburg from August 25 to September 2, 2017 . Germany last hosted boxing world championships in 1995 . The tournament was held in the Hamburg sports hall .

The venue was decided in 2015 by AIBA in Doha . Hamburg prevailed against Sochi (Russia) and Tashkent (Uzbekistan). The welcome ceremony for the delegations took place in the Elbphilharmonie .

qualification

For the first time, qualification for participation in the World Cup took place exclusively through the 2017 continental championships. Germany was excluded as the host and was allowed to provide a boxer in each of the ten weight classes.

Attendees

On August 24th, 243 boxers from 75 nations were registered for the World Cup.

Germany

In March 2017, the nomination committee of the German Boxing Association (DBV) decided on the basis of the unanimous proposal of the DBV coaching team to make up the following weight classes:

Participating Nations

Boxers from Fiji , Indonesia , DR Congo , R. Congo , Madagascar , Namibia , Papua New Guinea , Romania , Samoa and Syria were also qualified but did not take part in the world championships.

Abolition of the Angolan squadron

After two boxers from Angola had not started their fights in the preliminary round on August 26th and the third boxer of the team did not appear for his round of 16 fight on August 27th, the African team management announced the disappearance of the three boxers on the same day known and suspected that Menayame Mbimbi, Tumba Silva and Carlos Mbuyi Masia might have fled to France to apply for political asylum there.

Change of the scoring system

Since 2013, World Boxing Championships and Olympic Games have been rated using the Ten Point Must system . Each of the five judges must determine a winner after each of the three rounds, about 10: 9 or 10: 8 in the event of a great superiority. At the end, the scores of each judge are added up. Three of the five judgments were then selected at random, which then resulted in a unanimous result of 3: 0 or a split decision of 2: 1. Ties are excluded due to the odd number of rounds and judges.

After the judges were accused of bribery and scandalous decisions at the 2016 Olympic Games , AIBA sports director Philippe Tuccelli was tasked with reforming the rating system, which was first used at the World Championships in Hamburg. The five judges of a match were now determined by computer at random only 45 minutes before their assignment. In addition, for the first time at a World Cup, the judgments of all five judges were included in the evaluation and the results of each individual round were openly displayed on screens in the hall in order to identify obvious incorrect judgments more quickly. According to AIBA President Wu Ching-Kuo, this should create the greatest possible transparency. A total of 35 referees, who can be used as point and referees alike, from 34 nations were in action in Hamburg.
