Joe Ward , actually Joseph Ward (* the 30th October 1993 in Moate , Westmeath , Ireland ) is an Irish boxer in the heavyweight . Among other things, he was junior world champion in 2009, youth world champion in 2010, European champion in 2011, 2015 and 2017, and vice-world champion in 2015 and 2017.

Joe Ward is six feet tall and southbound.

youth

Even as a teenager he was extremely successful. In 2007 he won the silver medal at the European Schools Championships in England (weight class up to 56 kg) and a bronze medal at the Junior European Championships in Bulgaria (weight class up to 63 kg) in 2008 . In 2009 he secured the gold medal at the Junior World Championships in Armenia (weight class up to 70 kg) and in 2010 also the gold medal in the middleweight division at the World Youth Championships in Azerbaijan .

National championships

Joe Ward is Irish light heavyweight champion for 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2017. He beat Kenneth Egan three times in a final match .

European championships

Joe Ward won the light heavyweight championships in 2011 in Ankara , 2015 in Samokow and 2017 in Kharkiv , defeating Imre Szellő , Nikita Iwanow , Hrvoje Sep , Peter Müllenberg , Valentino Manfredonia and Muslim Gadschimagomedow , among others . This makes him Ireland's first boxer to win a European title three times.

In 2013 in Minsk he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Mateusz Tryc from Poland.

World championships

At the 2011 World Championships in Baku he lost to Ehsan Rouzbahani with a 15: 15+ in the round of 16 . In 2013 in Almaty , he won a bronze medal in the light heavyweight division after a semi-final defeat against Cuban Julio César La Cruz , after previously defeating Mateusz Tryc, Norbert Harcsa and Nikita Iwanow .

In 2015 in Doha and 2017 in Hamburg he was vice-world champion in the light heavyweight division, after losing again to Julio César La Cruz in the final bouts. He had previously defeated Oleksandr Chysnjak , Elshod Rasulov and Bektemir Meliqoʻziyev , among others . This makes him the only Irish boxer to date to have made it into a World Cup final twice.

Olympic games

At the European Olympic qualification in 2012 in Trabzon he won in the preliminary round against Kennedy Katende , but was eliminated in the round of 16 against Bahram Muzaffer and could therefore not qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London .

With second place at the 2015 World Cup, he was eligible to start at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , but lost his round of 16 against Carlos Mina .

World Series of Boxing

In the 2012/2013 season Joe Ward fought for the British Lionhearts in the World Series of Boxing (WSB). In the group stage he won four out of five fights. In the quarterfinals of the playoffs Ward won against Christian Demaj from the Mexico Guerreros, but could not prevent his boxing relay from being eliminated.

In 2018 he returned to the WSB for the British Lionhearts . His current record in the world series is eight wins in nine fights.

AIBA Pro Boxing

In the semi-professional APB series, Ward fought in 2014/15 and won four ( Kennedy St-Pierre , Spas Genow , Serge Michel , Oybek Mamazulunov ) out of six fights.

International tournament victories

Joe Ward is also the winner of international tournaments, including the Feliks Stamm Tournaments 2011, as well as the Chemistry Cup 2012 and 2014.
