Kenneth "Kenny" Egan (born January 7, 1982 in Dublin ) is a former Irish boxer and current politician. As a boxer he was among other things silver medalist at the 2008 Olympic Games in the light heavyweight division. In 2014 he was elected to South Dublin County Council for the Fine Gael People's Party .

Boxing career

Kenny Egan grew up in Clondalkin , County Dublin (now County South Dublin ). At the age of ten, he saw his compatriot Michael Carruth become Olympic boxing champion in Barcelona in 1992 . He was so excited about it that he also started boxing. He then belonged to the renowned Neilston Boxing Club Dublin .

National

Kenneth Egan was Irish middleweight champion in 2001 and 2002, and eight consecutive Irish light heavyweight champions from 2003 to 2010. He defeated Darren O'Neill and Tommy McCarthy twice . In 2011, 2012 and 2013 Egan was runner-up in the light heavyweight division after failing in the finals against Joe Ward .

EU championships

At the championships of the EU , he won the silver medal at the first event in 2003 in Strasbourg after losing to İhsan Yıldırım Tarhan in the final , after he had previously defeated Donatas Jasikevičius and John Dovi . In 2004 in Madrid he was defeated in the quarterfinals against Aleksy Kuziemski , but then won the gold medal in Cagliari in 2005 with victories against Kevin Piquet, İhsan Yıldırım Tarhan, István Szűcs and Marijo Šivolija .

In 2006 in Pécs , he beat Terwel Pulew in the quarterfinals before he was eliminated in the semifinals with a bronze medal against Constantin Bejenaru . In 2007 in Dublin he reciprocated in the final with a win against Bejenaru and won his second gold medal at EU championships. In the quarter-finals he also defeated Imre Szellő . He won his third gold medal in 2008 in Władysławowo by defeating Caner Sayak and Tony Jeffries .

In 2009 in Odense he was eliminated 6: 7 against Imre Szellő with a bronze medal in the semifinals, after he had defeated Constantin Bejenaru and Erik Skoglund again. Subsequently, there were no more EU championships until 2014.

European championships

His first participation in a European Championship he played in 2004 in Pula and lost in the first fight against İhsan Yıldırım Tarhan . In 2006 in Plovdiv he fought his way through premature victories against Robert Woge and Mamadou Diambang to the semi-finals and was eliminated there against Artur Beterbijew with a bronze medal.

After Darren O'Neill started for him at the 2008 European Championship, he started again at the 2010 European Championship in Moscow . There he won another bronze medal with victories against Simone Fiori, Aleksander Ramo and Ainar Karlson, as well as a narrow defeat in the semifinals with 9:11 against Abdelkader Bouhenia .

World Championships / Olympic Games

At the World Championships he first took part in 2001 in Belfast , where he was only defeated in the quarterfinals against Yordanis Despaigne . Also in 2003 in Bangkok he moved through victories against Donatas Jasikevičius and Beibit Schümenow in the quarter-finals before he was eliminated by Evgeni Makarenko . In 2005 in Mianyang he was eliminated in the second fight against Babacar Kamara .

In 2007 in Chicago he defeated Julius Jackson and Julio Castillo, but failed in the second round to Marijo Šivolija . In 2008 he took part in the European qualifying tournaments in Pescara and Athens to participate in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . He defeated Myasnik Sargsyan from Armenia, Emil Krastew from Bulgaria, Alessandro Sinacore from Italy, Daniël Kooij from the Netherlands, Gottlieb Weiss from Germany and Kennedy Katende from Sweden, while he only suffered one defeat against Ramasan Magomedow from Belarus and thus qualified. At the Olympic Games he then defeated Julius Jackson (22: 2), Bahram Muzaffer (10: 2), Washington Silva (8: 0) and Tony Jeffries (10: 3), before he defeated Zhang Xiaoping (7: 3) in the final . 11) and won the silver medal.

At the 2009 World Cup in Milan , he reached the quarter-finals again, where he was defeated by Abdelkader Bouhenia .

Others

In the 2010/2011 season Egan started for Miami in the World Series of Boxing and was able to win three of four fights. In the 2011/2012 season he fought in a fight for Leipzig , which he lost.

He also won the Gee-Bee Tournament in Finland in 2003, 2004 and 2011, the Tammer Tournament in Finland in 2004, and the Olympic Test Event 2011 in London .
