Tony Jeffries (born March 2, 1985 in Sunderland ) is a retired British boxer . He won a bronze light heavyweight medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics .

Career

Amateur career

Tony David Jeffries, nicknamed "Jaffa", grew up in the East Herrington neighborhood of his hometown of Sunderland, where he started boxing at the Lambton Street Boy's Club Sunderland when he was ten . He was encouraged to do so by his mother and uncle William Young "Billy" Bryce, a former professional boxer. He developed great talent at a very early age and was the first English student master in 1999 at the age of 14. He then moved to the renowned Sunderland ABC (ABC = Amateur Boxing Club) and was twice English champion as a junior. He was trained by Bobby Butts and Johnny Richarson at the time. In 2001 he won the gold medal in the light middleweight division at the European Cadet Championships in Liverpool and in 2003 a bronze medal in the middleweight division at the European Junior Championships in Warsaw .

In 2004 he started at the EU Championships in Madrid , where he was eliminated with a bronze medal in the semi-finals of the light heavyweight division against Poland's Aleksy Kuziemski . In 2005 he also won the silver medal in the light heavyweight division at the Commonwealth Championships in Glasgow . He did not play against Shawn Cox from Barbados in the final without a fight due to an injury. Also in 2005 he again won a bronze medal at the EU Championships in Cagliari when he was defeated in the semi-finals of the light heavyweight division against Marijo Šivolija .

In 2006 he became English champion and was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne against the Scot Kenneth Anderson. In 2007 he started at the World Championships in Chicago and fought his way to the quarter-finals against the Dutchman Daniël Kooij, the American Christopher Downs and the Belarusian Ramasan Magomedow, where he was eliminated against the Kazak Jerkebulan Schynalijew . Jeffries qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . Before that, he took part in the EU Championships in 2008 in Władysławowo , where he was able to beat Damian Kośmider from Poland and Imre Szellő from Hungary, losing more in the final against Kenneth Egan from Ireland and winning the silver medal.

At the 2008 Olympic Games he defeated the Colombian Eleider Álvarez in the second round and the Hungarian Imre Szellő in the quarter-finals . In the fight for the final, he lost again to Kenneth Egan and was therefore eliminated with a bronze medal.

Professional career

Tony Jeffries made his professional debut on February 27, 2009 and his last fight on September 3, 2011, before retiring in 2012 due to a hand injury. He had only ten fights with nine wins and one draw, which he achieved on July 23, 2010 against the Pole Michal Banbula. On October 16, 2009 he defeated the Belarusian master Artem Solomko. He was under contract with boxing promoter Frank Maloney.
