Eleider Álvarez Baytar (born April 8, 1984 in Apartadó ) is a Colombian professional boxer and former WBO world light heavyweight champion . He lives and trains in Canada .

Amateur career

Álvarez is the winner of the 2006 South American Games, the 2007 Pan American Games, the 2008 Pan American Championships and the 2008 American Olympic qualification. He also twice defeated the eventual three-time World Champion Julio César La Cruz . At a tournament in Venezuela in 2008, he also beat Yordanis Despaigne , a two-time medalist at world championships.

He then went to the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 to the start, but was disputed in the round of 16 after a +5: 5 point judgment against Tony Jeffries . He was also a participant in the 2007 World Championships in Chicago . There he defeated Mehdi Ghorbani , but lost to Ramadan Yasser in the subsequent round of 16 .

Professional career

He made his debut as a professional in August 2009 in Montreal with a knockout win in the first round against the American Jesse "Iron Jaw" Sanders. In December 2011 he won the North American Championship of the Association WBO by knocking out Emiliano Cayetano in the first round. He defended this for the first time in June 2012 unanimously on points against Shawn Hawk, a future World Cup challenger to the WBO. After another title defense against the former European champion Danny McIntosh, he also won the North American title of the WBA in March 2013 by an early victory against the Canadian Nicholson Poulard.

In September 2013 he defeated Edison Miranda, a veteran of the extended world class, as well as two young talents with Andrew Gardiner and Alexander Johnson. He beat the also undefeated South African Ryno Liebenberg in October 2014 in Monte-Carlo early in the seventh round. He won the "Silver" title of the WBC .

In June 2015 he won the second round against the Ukrainian Anatoly Dudschenko, who had beaten the German young talent Robert Woge in 2013 . With Isidro Prieto, he beat another undefeated opponent in August 2015. In November 2015, he managed to win points against the South African Isaac Chilemba . In July 2016, he defeated the Australian Robert Berridge.

On February 24, 2017, he defeated the Romanian former IBF world champion Lucian Bute by knockout in the fifth round. In June 2017, he beat Jean Pascal on points. On August 4, 2018, he defeated the Russian Sergei Kowaljow by TKO in the seventh round and thereby became WBO world light heavyweight champion. He lost the title on February 2, 2019 in a direct rematch through a point defeat to Kowaljow.

In January 2020, he defeated Michael Seals by knockout in the seventh round, winning the WBO Intercontinental and WBC Continental Americas light heavyweight titles .

On August 22, 2020, he lost to Joe Smith Jr. by knockout .
