Lucian Bute (born February 28, 1980 in Pechea, Galați district ) is a former Romanian professional boxer and IBF world champion in the super middleweight division.

amateur

Lucian Bute started his boxing career in Pechea in 1994. In 1996 he won the silver bantamweight medal at the European Cadet Championships in Italy , was a participant in the 1997 European Junior Championships in England and welterweight bronze medalist at the 1998 Junior World Championships in Argentina .

At the 1999 World Championships in the USA , he won bronze in the welterweight division, after defeating Nurhan Süleymanoğlu and Mihály Kótai , among others . At the European Championships in Finland in 2000 he was eliminated in the quarterfinals and at the 2001 World Championships in Northern Ireland in the round of 16 against Oʻtkirbek Haydarov .

He also started at the European Championships in Russia in 2002 , where he was able to beat Gaidarbek Gaidarbekow and Nikola Sjekloća before losing to Károly Balzsay in the quarterfinals . In the quarter-finals of the 2003 World Championships in Thailand he lost to Gennady Golovkin .

In addition, Bute won international tournaments in Denmark , Germany , Greece , Italy, Canada , Romania, the Czech Republic and Turkey , including the Ahmet Cömert Tournament in 1999 and 2002, the La Francophonie Games in 2001, and the Chemistry Cup in 2003. His defeated opponents included including Aleksy Kuziemski , Oleg Maschkin , Bülent Ulusoy and Ramadan Yasser .

According to his own statement, he played around 300 fights, of which he won more than 270.

Professional career

Lucian Bute switched to the professional camp in 2003 and was signed by the Canadian promoter Interbox from Montreal . His manager was Chris Ganescu, his coach Howard Grant . By mid-2007 he won each of his 20 fights, 16 of them prematurely. He defeated Dingaan Thobela , Kabary Salem , Andre Thysse, Lolenga Mock and Sakio Bika , among others .

He was then able to box on October 19, 2007 in Montreal for the IBF world title in super middleweight and won it by TKO in the eleventh round against the Colombian title holder Alejandro Berrio . This made him only the third Romanian professional world champion after Mihai Leu (1997) and Leonard Doroftei (2002/2003). He then defended the title, usually prematurely against William Joppy , Librado Andrade (twice), Fulgencio Zúñiga, Edison Miranda , Jesse Brinkley, Brian Magee , Jean-Paul Mendy and Glen Johnson , rising temporarily to number 1 in the world rankings of Ring Magazine on .

On May 26, 2012, he lost his tenth title defense by TKO in Nottingham in the fifth round against Carl Froch . Although he defeated the undefeated Denis Grachev in his next fight and won the NABF title, he lost on points to Jean Pascal in January 2014 . On January 28, 2015, he lost in the fight for the IBF World Championship on points against James DeGale .

In the fight for the WBC world title against Badou Jack on April 30, 2016, Bute reached a draw, but was subsequently disqualified for taking the banned substance Ostarine . On February 24, 2017, he lost to Eleider Álvarez by knockout in the fifth round . Without having fought another fight by then, he announced his resignation in 2019.
