Edison Miranda (born January 7, 1981 in Buenaventura , Colombia ) is a former Colombian boxer.

amateur

He started boxing at the age of fifteen and quickly became a three-time Colombian amateur champion. His record was 128 wins and four losses, but he did not qualify for the 2000 Olympic Games.

Professional career

He turned pro in the middleweight division in 2001 and showed good clout early on, albeit limited boxing skills. In Latin America he won 21 fights mainly against unknown opponents. From 2005 he boxed mainly in the USA, where he had to make ends meet in his first three appearances. In 2006, he defeated veteran Howard Eastman , who had previously boxed against Bernard Hopkins and Arthur Abraham and only lost on points, in an elimination match for a title chance in the IBF Association , as the first prematurely. With this victory, he was in all available rankings of the trade magazines Top-10 and a recognized worthy mandatory challenger for Abraham, whom he met on September 23rd. Sauerland Event won the auction for $ 404,000 against Miranda's promoter Warriors Boxing with a bid of $ 355,000, so the fight was held in Wetzlar .

Miranda lost the title fight in controversial circumstances on points. The referee's decision to continue the fight despite a serious injury to Abraham (broken jaw) and a recommendation by the ring doctor to stop, caused criticism and incomprehension. Also controversial were two breaks of several minutes during the fight to examine Abraham's jaw, which the defending champion also benefited from regeneration. Miranda also received multiple point deductions for low blows and an intentional headbutt, which contributed significantly to his point defeat. Due to the controversial circumstances, Miranda was left in first place by the IBF. He then beat Willie Gibbs (20 wins, one defeat) in the first round knockout and defeated the undefeated, powerful American Allan Green , against whom he was on the ground for the first time in his career, on points.

On May 19, 2007, he met in an elimination match of the WBC on the undefeated Kelly Pavlik , who was considered next to Miranda by Ring Magazine as the most powerful middleweight. In a fight at an extremely high pace, Miranda went down several times and was finally taken out of the fight by the referee in the seventh round with a technical knockout. At this point he was already well behind on points. Miranda was able to convince with his offensive work as usual, but problems in the cover work became clear.

Super middleweight

Then Miranda rose to a weight class and boxed super middleweight from then on. On June 21, 2008 there was a long-awaited rematch between Arthur Abraham and Miranda in Hollywood (Florida) . Abraham's IBF title was not at stake as a weight limit of 166 pounds (75.2 kg) was agreed between the regular middle and super middle weight classes. After three knockdowns in round four, Abraham won after 1:13 minutes by a technical knockout. After two victories against build-up opponents, Miranda was defeated on May 16, 2009 by the unbeaten Olympic champion Andre Ward on points and suffered his fourth defeat.

Then Miranda began to train in the USA under Joe Goossen and came in October 2009 against the Mexican Francisco Sierra to a first-round knockout success. In January 2010 he was supposed to compete against the German WBO world champion Robert Stieglitz , but had to cancel the fight at short notice because of flu. Instead, he received another World Cup chance on April 17, 2010 against IBF World Champion Lucian Bute . The unbeaten Romanian defeated him in Montreal, Canada by a technical knockout in the third round.

Miranda played his last professional fight on September 7, 2014 in Tolu, Colombia , against the Colombian Daniel Noguera. He won by knockout in round 1.

Others

Miranda's mother was only fourteen years old when he was born, had little interest in him, and left him. Disregarded by relatives, he had been looking for her since he was nine years old. When he found her, she still didn't want to take him in. He then lived on the street and worked as a farm worker and on construction sites.

Miranda currently lives in Carolina, Puerto Rico.
