Arthur Abraham (born February 20, 1980 in Yerevan , Armenian SSR , Soviet Union as Avetik Abrahamjan , Armenian Ավետիկ Աբրահամյան in scientific transliteration Avetik Abrahamyan ) is a former German professional boxer with an Armenian migration background and a former unbeaten IBF middleweight world champion as well as a former two-time WBO world champion in super middleweight.

Origin, education and private life

Arthur Abraham lived with his family in Yerevan (Armenia) for the first 15 years of his life. Arthur and his younger brother Alexander came to Germany with their parents in July 1995. From 1995 to 1996 Abraham learned the German language in an intensive German course and then completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter . According to his own statements, he also completed a few semesters of an Armenian distance learning course in international management .

As a teenager he drove bike races for the RMV Concordia Strullendorf and became a North Bavarian and Franconian youth champion. In 1999 he returned to his home country Armenia with his brother Alexander, where he did his military service until 2001 . After his brother had also finished his military service in 2002, they both returned to Germany in 2003. In August 2006 he took on the German citizenship , for which he had to take the Armenian one. Arthur Abraham is a stage name . According to his long-time trainer Ulli Wegner, the idea for this name came from him (Wegner) and promoter Wilfried Sauerland . In order for this to be entered in his passport, Abraham had to take a picture at the registration office in Berlin to prove his artistic talent. He drew Mount Ararat , which towers over Yerevan. His brother Alexander still has Armenian citizenship.

Arthur Abraham is married, has a son (born September 25, 2016) and lives in Berlin .

Beginnings as an amateur boxer (1996 to 2003)

Abraham started boxing at ETSV Bamberg and later moved to Nuremberg. He changed clubs several times. Like his brother Alexander, Arthur was an amateur boxer in the 1. FC Nürnberg boxing club . At the same time he boxed for the BC Eichstätt league season . In 1997 he became the International German Junior Light Middleweight Champion. As an amateur, he played a total of 90 fights, of which he won 81, with six draws and three losses.

Professional boxer (2003 until today)

In 2003 the Abraham brothers applied to Wilfried Sauerland and his head coach Ulli Wegner and were accepted into the Sauerland boxing stable. Arthur became the sparring partner of Sven Ottke , who was preparing to defend his title. He impressed so much that Wegner began to train him personally. In 2019, Wegner said in retrospect about the collaboration with Abraham that he was "not the hardest trainer".

Start in the middleweight division

Abraham made his debut as a professional boxer on August 17, 2003. At the beginning of his career he beat several above-average opponents. He won against Nader Hamdan (record 36 wins, one point defeat) and Héctor Velazco (former WBO world champion) by knockout , against the Canadian southpaw Ian Gardner (18 wins, 1 loss), he managed a point victory. In July 2005 he defended the Intercontinental title of the WBA with a points victory over the highly rated Briton Howard Eastman (at the Ring Magazine at the time top 10). Eastman had previously only lost to the American William Joppy and the then world champion Bernard Hopkins .

IBF middleweight world champion

In October 2005, the IBF belt finally became vacant when the title was stripped of the undisputed middleweight world champion Jermain Taylor . Surprisingly for many, Abraham was able to win the title on December 10, 2005 with a knockout victory over the Nigerian Kingsley Ikeke, who was one of the top ten Nigerians in Ring Magazine . The “true” world champion of the class was still Taylor, who had previously been in possession of the belts of all four major associations ( WBC , WBA and WBO ) and did not lose the IBF title in the ring.

Abraham defended his title on March 5, 2006 with a clear points win after twelve rounds against the Australian Shannan Taylor. The fight was a voluntary defense of the title and the opponent was selected accordingly without risk. Since Taylor had already been knocked out several times in the lower weight classes, after this fight you have to cut back on Abraham's clout, which is propagated by management and TV. Just two months later he won his second title defense against Kofi Jantuah, also only on points. Jantuah had previously been knocked out against ex-lightweight Manuel Gomez.

Victory on points with a broken jaw and further title defenses

On September 23, 2006 Abraham defended his IBF world championship belt in a controversial fight in the Rittal Arena in Wetzlar against Edison Miranda on points. The title holder contested the last eight rounds of the fight bleeding heavily with a double broken lower jaw . Although the ring doctor had recommended the referee to stop the fight due to the serious injury in the fifth round, the fight continued. Abraham would have lost by breaking off because the lower jaw fracture was caused by regular impact. Controversial were two interruptions of the fight over several minutes, which were used to examine Abraham's jaw, but as a side effect also brought regeneration pauses for the defending champion, which made Miranda feel disadvantaged. The Colombian, on the other hand, stood out for his unclean fighting style (headbutt, several low blows), which was punished by multiple deductions. However, even the five points deducted would not have prevented the outcome of the fight (final score: 114: 109, 115: 109, 116: 109). Abraham was operated on on his jaw the night after the fight. Two titanium plates were inserted into him with 22 screws. After the fight, coach Ulli Wegner and ring doctor Walter Wagner received Wegner's testimony after reports of bodily harm. Wegner later said in retrospect that what had happened in the week after the fight hadn't let go of his mind, "but I knew: 'Now you've made a star'", Wegner said literally.

On May 26, 2007 he voluntarily defended his title in Bamberg against the French-Canadian Sebastien Demers. The fight ended by knockout in the third round after two minutes and 57 seconds. In doing so, Abraham showed himself to be clearly superior to his opponent. The referee stopped the fight after a knockdown. On August 18, 2007, Abraham faced Khoren Gevor . The fact that the fight was considered compulsory defense despite Gevor's fourth place in the IBF rankings caused a lack of understanding in boxing circles. Nevertheless, the challenger, who won the first rounds of the fight, turned out to be a strong opponent for Abraham. Before that, however, he couldn't keep up his high starting pace, and Abraham got stronger and stronger from lap six. Even after several effective hits by the defending champion in rounds eight to ten, Gevor was able to stay on his feet. It was not until round eleven that Abraham decided the fight with a knockout with a heavy left hook. On December 8, 2007 he won in a title defense of his IBF title against Wayne Elcock by technical knockout in round five. This was followed by the renewed title defense on March 29, 2008 against the American Elvin Ayala, which he successfully completed by knockout in the twelfth round.

Rematch against Miranda in the US

On June 21, 2008, the long-awaited rematch between Abraham and Edison Miranda took place in Hollywood / California. Abraham's IBF title was not at stake, however, as a weight limit of 166 pounds was agreed between the regular medium and super medium weight classes. Abraham started cautiously in the first two rounds, then turned up and won the fight after three knockdowns by technical knockout in the fourth round.

On October 4, 2008, a mandatory defense fight against Raúl Márquez was planned, who had defeated Giovanni Lorenzo in twelve rounds in the preliminary fight. Because of an infection, Abraham had to cancel the fight at short notice. The fight, which was made up on November 8, 2008, won the clearly superior Abraham by giving up his challenger after the sixth round. On March 14, 2009 Abraham defended his IBF title against Lajuan Simon on points and thus not prematurely for the first time in seven fights. In the third round, Simon went down, but proved to be a taker in the further course of the fight. Abraham was still looking for the knockout and started a long attack in the fifth round, which cost a lot of strength, but which Simon survived with some difficulty. Then Abraham withdrew a little, Simon became more active and was able to land an impact hit with two left hooks in the eighth round. In the last two rounds of the fight, Abraham tried some actions to end the fight prematurely, but failed. Abraham's trainer, Ulli Wegner , was delighted with the fight. The world champion gained a lot of experience for future fights through this fight.

On June 27, 2009, Abraham defended his title against Mahir Oral through TKO. Orals trainer Hans-Jürgen Witte threw in the towel in round ten after several downfalls in the previous and the current round. Oral showed great takers, but could not prevail. Immediately after the fight, Abraham announced the move to super middleweight . The reason he gave was that he had to lose too much weight before every fight in the middleweight division in order to get below the mean weight limit of 72.574 kg, and this was accompanied by an excessive loss of substance. He also stated that apart from the planned but failed to materialize union fights against Felix Sturm or Kelly Pavlik would be in this weight class no longer a challenge for him and he had the goal of Super Champion to be at super middleweight. Abraham ended his middleweight career unbeaten with 30 wins from 30 fights.

Super middleweight

Super six tournament

On the occasion of the Super Six tournament , Abraham switched to the super middleweight division in 2009 and put down his IBF world title in the middleweight division. In addition to Abraham, WBA world champion Mikkel Kessler , WBC world champion Carl Froch , Andre Dirrell , Andre Ward and Jermain Taylor , who was replaced by Allan Green after his first fight , started as participants. Abraham announced that if he won a tournament he would end his career.

Abraham played his first fight in the Super Six tournament on October 17, 2009 in Berlin against the former world champion of all associations, Jermain Taylor, whom he defeated - just leading on points - with a knockout ten seconds before the end of the fight could. Although Taylor had already lost his world championship belts to Kelly Pavlik and Carl Froch in the fights , the victory of weight class climber Abraham was considered a surprise. Taylor, who suffered a slight brain hemorrhage from the knockout, then ended his participation in the tournament.

In the second fight of the Super Six tournament Abraham lost on March 28, 2010 in Detroit to Andre Dirrell and left the ring for the first time in his professional career as a loser. In the fourth round of the fight, Abraham went down - also for the first time in his career. From the seventh lap he had to struggle with a deep cut in his right eye. In the eleventh round Abraham - clearly lagging behind on points (92:97, 91:98, 92:97) - hit a right hook on the chin of Dirrell, who was kneeling on the ring floor and had previously slipped.

Dirrell showed a striking effect and a few minutes later still pronounced symptoms of disorientation. After a break in the fight, the referee decided on Abraham's disqualification due to a deliberate foul. However, various observers of the fight, such as the former world light heavyweight champion Henry Maske , as well as the Super Six tournament participant Mikkel Kessler, a stable mate of Abraham, and Allan Green did not consider Dirrell's reaction to Abraham's blow to be authentic. Dirrell was not as badly affected by Abraham's irregular blow as he would have pretended. Abraham's boxing promoter Wilfried Sauerland therefore protested against the decision, and because the doping test was not carried out in the scheduled time after the fight, but it was unsuccessful. Dirrell, like Taylor, withdrew from the tournament after fighting Abraham. The reason given was neurological problems.

On November 27, 2010 Abraham fought against Carl Froch and had to admit defeat after a one-sided fight. Two of the three judges saw the British every twelve rounds. Coach Ulli Wegner and promoter Wilfried Sauerland criticized their protégé's passivity and lack of will after the fight. Others diagnosed that the “technically limited” Abraham was overburdened in the super middleweight he was still unfamiliar with. Abraham didn't rule out a return to middleweight after the fight.

With a victory from three fights, Abraham finished fourth in the Super Six tournament and thus qualified for the semi-finals, also benefiting from various withdrawals from the tournament, including Andre Dirrell and Mikkel Kessler. After an intermittent build-up battle against the 36-year-old Croat Stjepan Božić , which Abraham won due to an injury Božić in the second round by technical knockout, he was defeated on May 15 in Los Angeles by his semi-final opponent, the undefeated American and later Tournament winner Andre Ward , clearly on points. After good approaches, Abraham revealed the same problems in the first rounds of the fight as he had against Carl Froch. However, Abraham announced in May 2011 that he wanted to stay in the weight class.

Comeback in the super middleweight division

After his unsuccessful attempt to gain a foothold in the super middleweight division and despite the previous announcement not to change the weight class, his promoter Wilfried Sauerland announced the return to middleweight division in July 2011. At the beginning of January 2012, however, Abraham announced that he would remain in the super middleweight position, as a return to the middleweight division would involve too much loss of substance. In an interview with the FAZ he said; “I don't think I'll get back to middleweight, it's way too difficult. The middleweight is not worth the fact that I ruin my body. "

He made his comeback on January 14, 2012 in Offenburg in the super middleweight division and won by knockout in the 5th round against the Argentine Pablo Farias. On March 31, 2012, he boxed in Kiel against Poland's Piotr Wilczewski (30 wins - 2 defeats), former EBU European super middleweight champion. Abraham won unanimously on points against the hard-hitting Poland.

New WBO super middleweight world champion

After these build-up battles, Abraham's management managed to arrange a world championship match against the German Robert Stieglitz , who was considered the weakest title holder of the four major international boxing federations in this weight class. Abraham won the fight on August 25, 2012 in Berlin unanimously on points. After an initially even fight, Abraham was able to land various heavy hits, especially from the fourth round. As a result, the goldfinch, previously traded as the favorite, could no longer take over the fight. Shortly after Abraham's victory it became known that a rematch had been agreed between the promoters in advance. On December 15 of the same year Abraham defended his title in Nuremberg against the Frenchman Mehdi Bouadla with a technical knockout. The referee ended the bout that Abraham had clearly dominated before in the eighth round because of a cut over Bouadla's left eye.

Abraham lost the rematch against Stieglitz and with it the world championship title on March 23, 2013 by breaking off after the third round due to a swollen eye. All laps had previously been rated for Goldfinch. Abraham won the third fight against Goldfinch on March 2, 2014 on points, making him WBO world champion again. On September 27, 2014 he successfully defended the title with a unanimous victory on points (117: 111, 117: 111, 119: 109) against the Englishman Paul Smith . In his next fight on February 21, 2015, Arthur Abraham and Paul Smith took revenge in Berlin. The judges' scores in O 2 World Berlin were again unanimous for Abraham (116: 112, 117: 111, 117: 111). The WBO elimination match between Felix Sturm and Robert Stieglitz on November 8, 2014, which should decide on Arthur Abraham's next mandatory challenger, ended in a draw. Abraham finally boxed on July 18, 2015 for the fourth time in the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle (Westphalia) for the "Final Showdown" against Robert Stieglitz and defended his title with a technical knockout in the sixth round. His next title fight was on November 21, 2015 in the TUI Arena in Hanover against the British Martin Murray , which Abraham won on points (115: 112, 112: 115, 116: 111).

Return to the USA

After a break of almost five years in the USA, Abraham made his comeback on April 9, 2016 in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas against the Mexican Gilberto Ramírez . Abraham lost this fight unanimously with 120 to 108 points and could not win a round. During the battle, Abraham was clearly too passive. As a southpaw, Ramirez has always avoided the side that was unfavorable for Abraham. Abraham could not play off his strong right and could not find it right in the fight overall.

Further career

In his next fight on July 16, 2016 in the Berlin Max-Schmeling-Halle in a test fight against the Norwegian Tim-Robin Lihaug, whom he defeated by TKO in the 8th round. Abraham fought for the international WBO title, which is important for the placement in the world rankings and a possible fight for the world championship in this association. On April 22, 2017, he won a twelve-round fight against Robin Krasniqi (118: 110, 117: 111, 115: 114) at the Erfurt trade fair .

In London's The SSE Arena Wembley on July 15, 2017 Abraham lost unanimously on points (110: 118, 110: 118, 108: 120) to IBO world champion Chris Eubank junior and with this defeat missed participation in the World Boxing Super Series .

After a nine-month break in the ring, he met his Danish teammate Patrick Nielsen on April 28, 2018 in the Baden-Arena in Offenburg , whom he defeated on points.

Others

Striking Abraham was his invasion of the ring: Abraham came up with a Phrygian cap (also Smurf hat called) to the ring, while the "Song of the Smurfs" was recorded in a texted him version or in the World Cup struggles of Vader Abraham sung. In August 2006, however, the promotion company Sauerland Events and with it Abraham were prohibited from using the comic characters and the song for boxing events by the rights holders Studio Peyo / IMPS by means of a declaration of cease and desist . Since then, the "Abraham Smurf" has become King Arthur and the smurf hat has been replaced by a crown. For the world championship match in August 2012, the invasion music chosen was “Eye of the Tiger” , known from the film Rocky , which was reinterpreted by the Italian tenor Alessandro Rinella.

Arthur Abraham appears regularly in various formats on German television. On October 24th, 2009 he climbed into a bouncy castle-like "ring" in Cologne for a show fight against the entertainer Oliver Pocher and fought with huge, air-cushion-like boxing gloves. On April 9, 2010, Abraham took part in the Let's Dance show on RTL , but left the show after the first episode to concentrate fully on his boxing career. In the movie Max Schmeling he played the boxer Richard Vogt in a supporting role. Abraham can be seen in a guest role in the cinema comedy Kokowääh 2 , which appeared on February 7, 2013 . In the Tatort episode Welcome to Hamburg on March 10, 2013 with Til Schweiger as the Hamburg investigator, Abraham appeared in the opening sequence.
