Paul Smith (born October 6, 1982 in Liverpool ) is a British professional boxer .

Career

In amateur boxing, he became English champion in 2002 and won the silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in the same year , when he was only eliminated in the final 16:18 against Jean Pascal . He achieved both successes in the light middleweight division.

He played his first professional fight in 2003 in Manchester. He won 23 fights in a row, including against Jonathan Reid (balance: 34-5) and was English middleweight champion in March 2008. In March 2009 he won the WBA international super middleweight title against Rashid Matumla and in October 2009 the British championship against Tony Quigley.

In December 2010 he lost in the Echo Arena Liverpool against the Olympic and eventual world champion James DeGale (8-0) after the referee dropped out by TKo in the ninth round. In November 2011 he was defeated at the Wembley Arena in London after two knockdowns prematurely in the second round against George Groves (13-0).

In September 2014 and February 2015 he boxed in Germany for the WBO super middleweight championship, but lost both duels on points against the title holder Arthur Abraham . In June 2015 Smith lost by TKo in the ninth round against Olympic and world champion Andre Ward (27-0). On June 17, 2017, Smith lost to Tyron Zeuge unanimously on points. The fight was about the world title according to the version of the WBA .

Paul Smith was a participant in the third season of the US reality TV series "The Contender". His brothers Stephen , Liam and Callum are also boxers.
