The Fernwehpark Oberkotzau Signs of Fame is a collection of place-name signs and signs from all over the world in Oberkotzau near Hof (Saale) , which aims to be understood as a peace project that unites people. The collection in Hof was accessible until 2017 and was then dismantled and stored. In 2018 the park was reopened in neighboring Oberkotzau.

The Fernwehpark was created on the model of the Sign Post Forest at the intersection of Highway No. 1 and No. 4 in Canada , in which tourists from all over the world put up signs from their homeland and in this way have collected around 80,000 signs so far .

court

The Fernwehpark Hof Signs of Fame was founded by the documentary filmmaker Klaus Beer , who took up the idea of the Sign Post Forest after a film documentary about Canada and incorporated it into a German equivalent in Hof. On November 9, 1999, ten years after the fall of the Berlin Wall , the collection was opened to the public. It contains almost 4,000 signs and was the only facility of its kind in Germany. The almost 800 square meter, freely accessible park was located directly on the left bank of the Saale at the Michaelisbrücke in Hof (map: ). Sponsors could either immortalize themselves with their own place name signs or sponsor sign posts. There were a total of 197 sign posts.

In March 2017, after disagreements between the sponsoring association and the city of Hof about the future of the park, all signs were removed and transported to Oberkotzau , a few kilometers away , and stored there.

Oberkotzau

The boards in Summa Park in Oberkotzau were set up in the second half of 2017, before the first new signs could be handed over a short time later. In addition to the new structuring of the park per se, an amphitheater was added that will be used for various events in the future. On May 18th the area was presented to the public. The forest of signs is now deliberately hidden so that visitors can "come specifically to the attraction".

function

Unlike the Sign Post Forest, the Fernwehpark is intended to serve as a peace project that unites people. For example, there are signs from the People's Republic of China in general and the Tibet Autonomous Region in the immediate vicinity, in order to set a “symbol for peace and togetherness of all peoples and nations”.

Star signs

To date, the project has been supported by over 400 celebrities by signing their own star signs for peace and equal treatment for all people. These star signs hang next to the place-name signs and are freely accessible. Additional handprints in clay are supposed to symbolize "raising the hand for peace in the world". These handprints are reminiscent of the Walk of Fame in Hollywood , just like the Boulevard of Humanity , on which extraordinary help is honored with a star , but they are not only indicative of artistic success.

society

The Fernwehpark-Verein, which maintains and extends the forest of signs, has existed since the project began. In addition to the maintenance of the area, he is also responsible for the organization of new shield sponsorships, the planning and organization of the shield signings and the awarding of star stars. On November 9th, 2009 the association celebrated its tenth anniversary.
