history

The newspaper was founded on October 16, 1945. It initially appeared on Tuesdays and Fridays. The editors were Hans Seidel and Tibor Yost .

The Hofer Anzeiger has been part of the Frankenpost Verlag since 1968 . It was founded in 1801 under the name Höfer Intelligence-Blatt . After 211 years, the history of the Hofer Anzeiger ended on March 31, 2012. The Hofer edition of the daily newspaper has been published since April 2, 2012 under the title Frankenpost EDITION STADT UND LANDKREIS HOF .

After the death of the publishers Seidel and Yost, their heirs sold Frankenpost in 1969 to the Deutsche Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft (DDVG), a media subsidiary of the SPD .

In 1986, the Süddeutsche Verlag got involved in Frankenpost with a 70 percent stake .

After the fall of the Wall in 1989, the publishing house expanded into what was then still the GDR. Just two days after the opening of the border, Hofer Verlag published the Vogtlandpost , followed in the following months by Vogtland-Anzeiger , Thüringenpost and Sachsenpost , which was later renamed the Zwickauer Tageblatt . The Thüringenpost and the Zwickauer Tageblatt had to be closed again. Frankenpost is also involved in the newspaper market in the neighboring Czech Republic .

In 2003 the majority owner, Süddeutsche Verlag, got into economic difficulties. These were resolved through a commitment by Südwestdeutsche Medien Holding (SWMH) to Süddeutsche. This commitment had serious effects on the Frankenpost: In the Plauen area, the Vogtland-Anzeiger was the rival newspaper to the Free Press , which belongs to the SWMH. In order to avoid competition law problems, DDVG also took over Süddeutsche's shares in Frankenpost at short notice. As a result, the Vogtland-Anzeiger was sold to an uninvolved third party on September 1, 2004, so that the Frankenpost was no longer involved in any newspapers in Saxony and Thuringia. The cartel problems were no longer there and the Süddeutsche Verlag took over a 65 percent stake in Frankenpost.

On June 23, 2016, Nordbayerischer Kurier announced on its own account that, subject to approval by the Federal Cartel Office, Frankenpost would take over 65 percent of the shares in the Bayreuther Tageszeitung. A close cooperation between the two newspapers is planned.

The Frankenpost operates a printing center in Hof.

A subsidiary of Frankenpost is Blickpunkt Verlag GmbH for advertising newspapers based in Hof.
