Alf Mintzel (born April 18, 1935 in Augsburg ; actually Johann Albrecht Mintzel ) is a German sociologist and political scientist .

career

Mintzel initially studied painting and graphics with Erich Rhein at the former Werkkunstschule Hanover , now the University of Applied Sciences for Media, Information and Design . In 1959 he began studying law at the University of Hamburg and continued it at the Universities of Würzburg, Marburg and the Free University of Berlin. 1961/62 switched to the subject sociology and then went through all stages of a scientific university career at the Free University of Berlin: the diploma exam in sociology in 1967, the doctorate in political science in 1974 and the habilitation with the venia legendi in political science with a focus on political science Sociology. From 1967 to 1974 he was a research assistant at the former Institute for Political Science at the Free University of Berlin. From 1974 to 1978 he held the position of assistant professor at what would later become the Central Institute for Social Science Research. 1979/80 he represented at the University of Bochum, 1980/81 at the University of Mannheim a chair for political science.

In 1981 he was appointed to the chair of sociology at the University of Passau , which was newly founded in 1978 . He was one of the founding members of the university that was being established. Mintzel's task was initially to organize the subject of sociology, to integrate it into the overall structure of the Faculty of Philosophy and to coordinate the teaching services with other courses.

Mintzel's research interests were broad. The focus of his research and numerous publications were in the fields of political sociology , political science and contemporary political history, in the fields of cultural sociology and in fields of Upper Franconian industrial and cultural history from the 16th century to the present. The visual arts and contributions to current artistic creation were added as a fourth area of work. He found his way into science and especially into political science party research in 1962 with a grant from the US Ford Foundation to promote young scientists at the Institute for Political Science at the Free University of Berlin. Mintzel has repeatedly appeared in public as a contentious publicist on various occasions . In 1990/91 his demand, introduced in 1978 when the University of Passau was founded, which had shown the Jesuit counter-Reformation “Maria vom Siege”, was to be withdrawn from official university circulation nationwide in 1990/91. The University of Passau introduced a new logo in 2003. A detailed and detailed description of his academic career and professional work is in his blog “There was a lot of space between the chairs. Survival Stories of a Cross-Border Commuter ”. In the blog he presented his autobiography in chronologically ordered chapters. A second blog deals with the life stories and worlds of experience of his ancestors.

In party research, Mintzel has been concerned with the history of the CSU and its role in Bavaria since the mid-1960s, as well as with the general development of the popular parties in the party system of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). His studies on the CSU and the political development of Bavaria after 1945 were considered pioneering achievements in empirical party research and made him known far beyond the borders of the FRG. In the theory of parties he dealt with typologies of the popular parties and analyzed the real development processes of the "big parties". His research contributions, particularly on the development history of the popular parties and the CSU, have been translated into English, Spanish, Italian and Russian. In the 1970s, he was also involved at the Central Institute for Empirical Social Research at Freie Universität in the preparation of the party handbook, a standard work on party research. In 1990, together with Heinrich Oberreuter , he published the anthology Political Parties in the Federal Republic of Germany (2nd edition 1992).

In the areas of cultural sociology, his second focus, Mintzel dealt with the concept of culture in sociology and related sciences as well as with the controversial issues about the developments, structures and conflict situations of multicultural societies in Europe and North America. The macro analysis and the comparison of multiethnic and multicultural megacities, megalopolis and metropolises became the focus of his teaching at the University of Passau. In 1997 he published an extensive textbook on this. In the context of sociocultural issues, he analyzed the political-cultural hegemony of the CSU and the weaknesses of "countercultures" in Bavaria.

In the field of Upper Franconian commercial and cultural history, Mintzel, who comes from a long-established Upper Franconian printing and publishing dynasty, researched the history of printing, publishing and press in Upper Franconia from the 16th century to the present day. He summarized his research results from several decades in his two-volume work From Black Art to the Printing Industry (2011). In addition, he published his research results on the recent political history of Hof , especially on dealing with the National Socialist past.

After a long break in his artistic activity, he began to pursue his training at the former Werkkunstschule Hannover in the 1980s and to take part in exhibitions. The focus of his artistic work is object art .

Mintzel has three daughters (including the writer Theresa Sperling ) with his wife Ingelu Mintzel (née Schaltbrand ).
