Theresa Sperling (* 1971 in Berlin as Theresa Florentine Mintzel ) is a German writer, playwright and stage poet.

Life and professional history

Theresa Sperling is the daughter of Alf Mintzel . After graduating from high school, she completed her dance training at the Etage in Berlin, the Arnhem University of the Arts and as a scholarship holder at the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance in New York. She returned to Berlin to work as a freelance dancer and to study German and North American studies at the Free University . She has lived in Nordhorn with her husband and two sons since 2004 and teaches German, English and performing arts as a senior teacher at the Gymnasium an der Vechte, Emlichheim .

Her work as a playwright is particularly characterized by the strong choreographic structure of her productions and the rhythm of the language. In 2016 she made her debut as a novelist with her youth novel “Mittelmeersplitter” at Lektora Verlag, followed in 2017 by her dystopia “Tiefenwelt”, then her two-part youth thriller “Penelope Wolfsköder” and “Penelope Puppy Death” by Drachenmond Verlag . Since she returned to the stage as a poetry slammer in 2015 , Sperling has appeared across Germany and is considered the most successful slammer in Lower Saxony. The booklets for her slam texts are designed by the painter Julia Siegmund. Since 2015 she has reached the finals of the Lower Saxony-Bremen Poetry Slam Championships every year, and the semifinals of the German-language championships in 2017. In 2018, Sperling was vice-national champion, in the same year her children's novel “The twelfth fairy did not even appear” was published as an e-book. Her anthology "Slam Poetry. 39 Monologues & Dialogues" ( Deutscher Theaterverlag , 2019) is a collection of slam texts that function as performable mini-dramas for young people. This is the first time that Sperling has merged theater play and slam text into a genre that she calls "poetry drama" in the foreword. With "About us the stars and below us fear" (Deutscher Theaterverlag, 2020), she publishes four youth theater pieces for self-writing and further writing.
