history

The company was founded by Arwed Strauch in 1891 under the name Arwed Strauch Verlag in Leipzig. This makes it one of the oldest theater publishers still in existence today in Germany. The company was a book, magazine and music publisher, a stage distributor and a book club. Based on the German Wandervogel movement and reform pedagogy , Arwed Strauch's focus was on the publication of plays for young people, both in club life and in the church and school sector.

The publishing house was able to save its existence through the war, moved to Rotenburg an der Fulda in the late 1940s and called itself Deutscher Laienspielverlag . Walter Huhn was the managing director of this publishing house. The publishing house has remained true to its previous publishing focus with its range of children's and youth theater, especially for church and school areas. In 1952 the company moved to Weinheim an der Bergstrasse . In 1969 the name was changed to Deutscher Theaterverlag . Worksheets or books for kindergartens, elementary and secondary schools and for cultural work as well as a journal on theater and media studies for young people supplemented the drama program, which also included shadow, hand puppet and marionette theater. Since the 1970s, the Deutsche Theaterverlag has also represented the rights of other well-known stage publishers towards school and amateur theaters. The publisher's once church orientation no longer plays a role today. Gabriele Barth has been the sole managing director since 1999.

profile

With several thousand titles, the Deutsche Theaterverlag offers a diverse spectrum of plays for all age groups and the most diverse theater environments. He publishes the magazine for a theater by and with young people, play and theater , and publishes specialist books on the theory and practice of contemporary school and amateur theater. The boundaries between the professional theater makers, the schools and the amateurs have become porous for several years , primarily thanks to the theater pedagogy that mediates between them . The Deutsche Theaterverlag would like to offer a publishing home to the broad spectrum of the school, youth and amateur theater scene as well as theater education in the future.
