Emlichheim ( Low German and Dutch : Emmelkamp ) is a municipality in the Grafschaft Bentheim district in Lower Saxony ( Germany ) and the seat of the municipality of the same name .

geography

Emlichheim is on the German-Dutch border. The place is bounded in the south by the Vechte and in the north by the Coevorden-Piccardie Canal . The municipality is the administrative seat of the joint municipality Emlichheim with the municipalities Emlichheim, Hoogstede , Laar and rings . In recent years Emlichheim has experienced massive growth, mainly due to the influx of Dutch nationals.

history

Emlichheim has existed at least since the time of Charlemagne . In a document from 1312, the place is mentioned under the name Emminchem .

Language history

In the colloquial dialect, the name Emmelkamp is still common today. The High German name Emlichheim is derived from the original Low German forms Emminchem or Emmenheim . Since the time of the Thirty Years' War was high German in the county of Bentheim used for documents. Officially, the name was transferred from the Low German used until then into High German as Emlichheim. Due to the close cultural and economic ties with the Netherlands, especially in the Lower Counties , Dutch was the common language of communication, church and written language since the 16th century . Dutch was the first language used in schools in the county until the 1820s. The colloquial language was the local Low German dialect, which was heavily influenced by the written Dutch language.

In the local colloquial language, the form Emlenkamp established itself for Emlichheim over time. This form found its way into the Dutch spelling via the colloquial language. In practice it so happened that from now on in High German Emlichheim is used, in Dutch-language documents from the 16th to 19th centuries Emlenkamp is used.

19th and 20th centuries

In the 1830s, many Grafschafter pastors and parishes joined the separation movement (Dutch: Afscheiding ) that was emerging in the Netherlands, the Grafschaft and East Friesland , including numerous Reformed people in Emlichheim who saw themselves as " old reformed ". As a result, Dutch became the church language . The National Socialists came up against this and finally banned the use of Dutch in church services and at church celebrations. The old reformers in Emlichheim consistently rejected the National Socialist ideology. The “separation ceremony” for the 100th anniversary of your community in October 1934 was not least an expression of the determination to defend the “Dutch connection”.
