Osterwald is a municipality and part of the Neuenhaus municipality in the Grafschaft Bentheim district in Lower Saxony .

Geographical location
The neighboring communities of Osterwald are Neuenhaus , Esche , Georgsdorf , Hoogstede , Wietmarschen and Nordhorn .
Landscape and water
There are two streams in Osterwald: the Soermannsbecke and the Böltbecke, which later flow into the leeward . In addition, the Coevorden-Piccardie Canal runs through the municipality.
The Hootmanns Meer nature reserve (code NSG WE 127) is located in the municipality of Osterwald, with an area of around 30 hectares .

history
The name Osterwald first appeared in documents from the 14th century. The name of the Alte Piccardie district goes back to Johan Picardt (1600–1670).

The main economy in Osterwald is agriculture. In addition to agriculture, the second largest industry is the oil industry . This was the start of rapid development and the petroleum industry was the largest economic factor. At the time, Osterwald was one of the richest communities in Germany. In Osterwald there is an oil museum (reopened in 2014 after renovation) and a farmer's museum. In the village community center there are weddings and other celebrations as well as theater performances and children's musicals. In addition, Osterwald is also a popular place to practice the regional " Kloatscheeten ".
