Coevorden-Piccardie Canal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Coevorden-Piccardie Canal (also known as Georgsdorf-Piccardie-Coevorden Canal , CPK for short ) connects the South-North Canal near Georgsdorf , which is north of Nordhorn in the Lower Saxon county of Bentheim , with the Dutch Stieltjeskanaal near Coevorden .

history

The canal is part of the Left Ems canal network , which was built between 1870 and 1904. Pastor Johan Picardt made the first canal construction efforts in 1647. The canal construction began in 1870, but was not completed until the 20th century. In addition to transporting goods for ships with a load capacity of up to 200 tons, the canal also served to drain the moors. It was gradually shut down from 1965 due to insufficient traffic. Due to the low bridges and no longer operational locks, the canal is no longer navigable and only serves for drainage.

On parts of the canal there are sculptures from the "Open Museum" Kunstwege .
