kunstwegen is a Dutch-German sculpture route that has been leading from Nordhorn in Lower Saxony along the Vechte to Zwolle in the Netherlands since 2000 . The 132-kilometer route follows the river that has linked the county of Bentheim with neighboring Overijssel for centuries . More than 60 works of art from over 20 years reflect the development of art in public spaces. Since 2011, the raumsichten sculpture project has been extending the sculpture route from Kunstwegen south through the Upper County of Bentheim to North Rhine-Westphalia .

kunstwegen is one of the largest open museums in Europe, in which sculptures are in the open air and accessible to everyone around the clock.

The cycle path for art trails is clearly signposted and a section of the longer Vechte Valley route. Next to or in front of the Kunstwegen objects there is a “blue dot” in the grass with the name of the artist and the title and year of creation of the work. A colored information column is set up at all stations that provides information about the work of art, nature, history and the sights of the surrounding area. Along the main traffic route, signs point to the exit to the art path objects. The corresponding maps and accompanying material for the Kunstwege route are available from the Städtische Galerie Nordhorn, the regional tourist offices and regular bookshops.

history

The suggestion for the German-Dutch project kunstwegen came from the Städtische Galerie Nordhorn . Under the artistic direction of Martin Köttering and Roland Nachtigäller and in close cooperation with the Grafschaft Bentheim district , sixteen works were created in 1999 and 2000. kunstwegen was also the occasion to merge two existing sculpture ensembles on both sides of the border into a German-Dutch art route.

The five-kilometer-long Nordhorn Sculpture Path, elaborated in 1989 by Eckhard Schneider, then director of the Nordhorn Municipal Gallery, brought together 36 artistic works from 1970 to 1997 for a first walk. Starting from the Vechtesee , site-specific commissioned works from the years 1970 to 1997 can be found in the urban area. The route leads to Frenswegen Monastery , where the sculptures from the three international sculpture symposia on Bentheim sandstone from 1979, 1982 and 1988 are displayed. Many projects use the Vechte as a natural guide and sometimes involve them directly. In 1987, the little-used railway line between the Dutch cities of Zwolle (capital of the province of Overijssel) and Emmen gave the impetus for the idea of an Kunstlijn in the Netherlands . Rudolph J. Krudop from Stichting Kunst & Cultuur Overijssel commissioned regional and international artists to develop permanent projects for the initially nine train stations along the route . By 1993, almost 30 works of art were grouped under the concept of the Kunstlijn on the Dutch side of the Vechte. With sixteen new positions, kunstwegen is bringing these ensembles together to create a cross-border, German-Dutch sculpture route.

In June 2000, kunstwegen was inaugurated by the Dutch Queen Beatrix .

organization

The project has been binationally capable of business since 2001 through the sponsoring organization kunstwegen EWIV (European Economic Interest Association). Kunstwegen stichting was founded on the Dutch side. Kunstwegen is institutionally connected to the Grafschaft Bentheim district and the Nordhorn municipal gallery. This is the center of the content and organizational work as well as art communication with the art school.

concept

With the Sculpture Path Nordhorn and the Dutch Kunstlijn, two existing sculpture ensembles were integrated into the project. The visitor should be shown the recent history of an art situated in public living space. At the suggestion of the four guest curators Saskia Bos , Zdenek Felix , Jan Hoet and Harald Szeemann , artists created new works that relate to local history and the landscape. The geographical, historical and cultural-historical characteristics of the respective environment determine the design of the sculptures. The positions of the works of art can be found in heather, raised bog and nature reserves, in wooded areas and in towns.

Expansion of spatial views

With the raumsichten project , the sculpture route kunstwegen is extended from Nordhorn through the southern part of the Grafschaft Bentheim district to Ohne on the border with North Rhine-Westphalia. The topic of raumsichten is the future regional planning and design of landscape and urban space. Artistic and planning perspectives on the development of new ways of dealing with landscape and cultural space have already been brought together in two working forums. Eleven international artists worked directly with experts from administration and practice on nine of their own projects, which address socio-political issues relating to the use and planning of public space. In view of the fact that living spaces have been planned in many places and are fundamentally changing, new possibilities are to be discovered in the connection of site-specific artistic works with social, communicative and planning processes.

The extension of the art path route was opened on May 4, 2012.
