François Robert Dominique Sterchele (born March 14, 1982 in Liège ; † May 8, 2008 in Vrasene ) was a Belgian football player who last played for Club Bruges .
Player career
François Sterchele started his career as a football player in the youth of the RFC Liège , where he was also active in the men's team in the 2000/01 season. In 2001 he went to the provincial club RFC Union Kelmis , which was active in the lower class , where he was able to indicate his great talent as a striker in his first season. With eleven goals in 29 games, he also drew the attention of higher-class clubs. With 14 and 23 goals in each of the following two seasons, he was able to confirm his good performance from the first year, with the team already playing in the fourth-highest division in the country. Due to his strong offensive performance, the third division team Oud-Heverlee Löwen signed him at the beginning of the 2004/05 season .
There Sterchele was able to excel again offensively with 21 goals in only 27 games, so that he was taken under contract with the first division club Sporting Charleroi for the 2005/06 season . With nine goals in 31 games, he also proved his scoring risk in the Belgian first class. The following year, with Germinal Beerschot , he finally made his breakthrough in professional football. With 21 goals he was the sole top scorer in the 1st division . As a result, he was signed by Club Bruges , where he quickly secured his regular place.
Sterchele died early in the morning on May 8, 2008 in a car accident between Antwerp and Knokke . With his Porsche Cayman he came off the road, crashed into a tree and was dead on the spot. According to the prosecutor, the reason for this accident was excessive speed.
The year before he was called up for the first time in the Belgian national football team , where he came to four international appearances in six calls. He made his debut on March 24, 2007 in the 4-0 defeat against Portugal , when he came on the lawn in the 64th minute of play for Carl Hoefkens . In all of his missions, the strong-scoring offensive player in the league remained goalless.
