successor Porsche Cayman (type 981c)

The Porsche Cayman (987c) is a sports car from Porsche and the coupé version of the Roadster Boxster (type 987) , on whose technology it is based. The 987c is the first Cayman generation to be produced. Although the Boxster has a more elaborate body with its convertible top, the Cayman Coupé is positioned higher than the Roadster with a price that is 8 or 10 percent higher (Cayman S) and an increase in output of 10 hp, despite largely the same equipment.

Model history

The S version of the Cayman premiered at the International Motor Show (IAA) in September 2005. The sporty two-seater was launched in Germany on November 26, 2005 at a base price of 58,529 euros (including 16%  VAT ). The internal factory designation of the Porsche Cayman is 987c, the model number 987120.

Most of the Cayman was built for Porsche by Valmet Automotive in Uusikaupunki , Finland . In November 2012, production was relocated to the Volkswagen factory in Osnabrück. Compared to its open sister model, the Boxster, the Cayman is considered to be the sportier car . The handling is more precise and agile thanks to the stiffer body .

Until the end of July 2006, the car was only offered as the Cayman S with 3.4-liter six-cylinder with 217 kW (295 hp), as Porsche describes the more powerful and better-equipped model in the respective model series. The 2.7-liter six-cylinder with 180 kW (245 hp) at 6500 rpm has also been available since the end of July 2006.

The Cayman S differs from the basic model in the following additional equipment features:

  • 6-speed gearbox (on the basic model as an accessory)
  • Brake calipers painted red (Cayman: black anodized)
  • Front brake disc diameter 318 mm (Cayman: 298 mm)
  • Double tailpipe
  • 18-inch tires as standard

The optional PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) contains a modified chassis with a 10 mm lower body, electronically controlled dampers and two manually selectable maps, normal or sport. The PCCB (Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake) brake system with ceramic discs and front 6-piston calipers can also be ordered.

At the New York International Auto Show , the Porsche Cayman S was voted "2007 World Performance Car". This award was given by a jury made up of international automotive journalists. The Cayman S relegated the new Audi RS4 and the BMW M5 to their places.

Since the beginning of 2007, Porsche has been offering the so-called “Aerokit Cayman” for the external enhancement of the Cayman exterior . It consists of components that have been tested in the wind tunnel and that are designed to lower the drag coefficient (c w ) and thereby reduce lift. Other essential components of the aerokit are the attachments in the body color, as well as a bow that has been improved in terms of aerodynamics and design. In addition, a fixed rear spoiler should improve driving stability.

Model year 2009

Cayman engine compartment

Since February 2009, the car has been equipped with two new engines: The basic model has an engine that has been enlarged to 2.9 liters and has an output of 195 kW (265 hp). The standard consumption with the optionally available 7-speed Porsche double clutch transmission (PDK) is reduced by 10 percent from 10.1 to 9.1 l / 100 km. This model also has the larger brake discs of the Cayman S at the front and 4 mm thicker at the rear.

The DFI (Direct Fuel Injection) engine with direct fuel injection in the Cayman S has a displacement of around 3.4 liters (3436 cm 3 ) and develops 235 kW (320 hp). Both models have hill start assistance as standard and meet the Euro 5 emissions standard that has been in force since September 1, 2009 .

Cayman R

Front view of the Cayman R

Since November 17, 2010, in addition to the Cayman and Cayman S models, a version called Cayman R has been offered. It was introduced at the LA Auto Show and derived from the Cayman S. The Cayman R develops 243 kW (330 hp). That is 8 kW (10 PS) more and at the same time it is 55 kg lighter in order to obtain a better power-to-weight ratio and better dynamics - measures comparable to those implemented in the Boxster Spyder model range. A further increase in driving dynamics is achieved by a newly tuned sports suspension, which also lowers the vehicle by 20 mm compared to the Cayman S. The Cayman R has 235x35 ZR19 tires on the front axle and 265x35 ZR19 tires on the rear axle and reaches a top speed of 282 km / h (5 km / h more than the production model Cayman S). The acceleration time from 0 to 100 km / h with the 6-speed manual transmission is 5.0 s. With the optional Porsche Doppelkupplung PDK, the sprint from 0 to 100 km / h takes 4.7 s. The prerequisite for this is the use of Launch Control, which can be activated with the optional “Porsche Sport Chrono Plus” package.

The external appearance is characterized by a black border around the main headlights, a fixed spoiler at the rear, larger spoiler lips at the front and a Porsche logo on the doors. The doors come from the 911 Turbo and, like the front hood, are made of aluminum. A further reduction in weight is achieved through reduced equipment: less insulation material, no door shelves and cup holders, as well as standard sports bucket seats. Textile loops from the GT3 RS model serve as door openers. Air conditioning, radio, PCM (Porsche Communication Management) are not included in the standard scope, but can be ordered. The model came on the market in February 2011 at a price of 69,830 euros (including 19% VAT).

Special models

Based on the Cayman S, there have so far been two special models that stand out from the series model through partially increased engine performance, a unique design, greatly expanded standard equipment and a limited edition.

Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 (2007)

Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1

The first special model of the Cayman, the Cayman S Porsche Design Edition 1 , was presented in September 2007 at the IAA . This special edition was limited to 777 models, all of which were also sold. Technically, the Cayman S was not modified, but optically, most easily recognized by the three matt black stripes that stretch across the vehicle.

Features of the special model:

  • Exterior design: three matt black stripes with “Design Edition 1” lettering lengthways across the vehicle and on the doors; red tail lights; gray side indicators.
  • Interior design: instrument cluster with black numerals in the Porsche Design Chronograph Look; Stainless steel entry panel with lettering; Full black leather interior; Seats with Porsche crest; Sports steering wheel + roof lining + handbrake in Alcantara, center console painted black, vehicle number ### / 777 on the glove compartment.
  • Technology: PASM chassis; forged 19-inch turbo wheels; 5 mm spacers.
  • Design accessories: A leather case from Porsche Design with a Porsche Design black quartz chronometer, sunglasses, pocket knife, key ring, writing implement.

The Porsche Design Quartz Chronometer is matched to the instrument cluster and is only available in conjunction with the vehicle, which means that it is limited to 777 pieces and not available individually. The price was 69,942 euros (including 19% VAT).

Cayman S Sport (2008)

Cayman S Sport

A second special model of the Cayman appeared in August 2008 under the name Porsche Cayman S Sport . This special model is limited to 700 copies and has an engine output that is 6 kW (8 hp) higher than that of the regular Cayman S. The higher performance is achieved through a modified sports exhaust system . The exterior of the special model is based on the 997 GT3 RS and has a number of sporty extras as standard, such as the Sport Chrono Package. The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake , a ceramic brake system that can only be found as standard in the Porsche 911 GT2 , is also only available as an option for the “Cayman S Sport”. The price for this special model is just like the first special model at 69,942 euros (incl. 19% VAT).

Cayman S Black Edition (2011)

This third special model was limited to 500 copies. It contained the slightly more powerful engine of the Cayman R with 242 kW (330 hp), the equipment packages "Comfort", "Infotainment" and "Design", and was painted black with black rims and black leather interior. The list price was 67,807 euros (including 19% VAT).
