development

Dashboard of the Cayenne S

The Porsche Cayenne is a sporty multi-purpose vehicle with increased ground clearance, variable load space and permanent all-wheel drive .

It shares a common platform with the Touareg from Volkswagen and the Q7 from the Volkswagen subsidiary Audi . Chassis, electrical and body components are largely identical. (Small) parts from the entire Volkswagen Group are used in all vehicles. Part of the production of the Cayenne and its sister models takes place at Volkswagen Slovakia ( Slovakia ).

The partners benefit from this cooperation primarily on the cost side, as part of the development costs could be distributed across all vehicles.

At the time, the Cayenne was the fastest SUV that was mass-produced. Due to its elaborate all-wheel drive with dynamic longitudinal lock and the air suspension (partly optional), it also has good off-road properties. However, the low-profile tires, which are usually fitted and designed for high speeds, sometimes severely limit the off-road capability.

At the Porsche plant in Leipzig , the Cayenne bodies delivered from Bratislava are fitted with the engines from Zuffenhausen .

The Cayenne represented a successful model for the Porsche company. In the 2003/2004 financial year, it was the most popular Porsche series with 39,900 units sold. Around 40 percent of total Cayenne sales were achieved in North America . In 2005/2006 sales of the Cayenne fell by almost 30 percent, and in the important North American market by almost 45 percent. In February 2007 a revised version of the Cayenne came onto the market. The consolidated results for the 2007/2008 financial year for the Cayenne were as follows: Production amounted to 48,497 units (+34.1 percent compared to 2005/2006), of which 45,478 units were sold worldwide (+34 percent compared to 2005 / 2006).

Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid Architectural Vehicle

The hybrid drive of the successor model was developed in the first generation Cayenne. At the IAA 2007 , the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid Architectural Vehicle was presented as a first look at a hybrid model from the brand.

designation

Cayenne is pronounced [ kaˈjɛn ], like cayenne , the capital of French Guiana , and cayenne pepper . The frequently heard incorrect pronunciation variants [ tʃaˈjɛn ] and [ tʃeˈjɛn ] stand for the Cheyenne Indian tribe (which in turn is pronounced correctly [ ʃeˈjɛn ]).

From February 24, 2007, the Cayenne came on the market in a revised version. The Cayenne GTS also celebrated its premiere at the 2007 IAA.

The biggest changes concerned the engines. The use of direct injection should reduce fuel consumption by 8 percent. According to Porsche, consumption can even be reduced by up to 15 percent. There is also a significantly increased engine output. The V6 gets 29 kW (40 PS) more power, the V8 of the S 33 kW (45 PS) more and the top version "Turbo" has a 37 kW (50 PS) more powerful biturbo engine with 368 kW (500 PS) ). On request, the Cayenne Turbo can also be ordered ex works with a power increase to 397 kW (540 PS). The cost of the increase in performance in March 2008 was 15,351 euros. The Cayenne GTS has a 4.8 liter naturally aspirated engine derived from the Cayenne S, develops 298 kW (405 hp) and offers a maximum torque of 500 Nm.

Evident is the revised version of the Cayenne on new headlights and LED - rear lights , new front and rear paneling, new exterior mirrors, new fenders, modified side skirts and a revised rear spoiler . The drag coefficient has been reduced by around 10 percent, which also benefits fuel consumption.

In August 2008, a Cayenne Turbo S was back in the range. The engine based on the Cayenne Turbo now delivers 404 kW (550 PS) and achieves a maximum torque of 750 Nm thanks to the modified intake system and engine electronics. In addition, the PCCB carbon-ceramic brake system was available in the Turbo S for the first time in the Cayenne .

From 2009 the Cayenne was available with a diesel engine for the first time. This was the 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel from VW with 176 kW (240 PS), 550 Nm and standard Tiptronic S. Consumption in the ECE driving cycle is 9.3 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers. This is also the first diesel engine in a Porsche car.

Based on the double victory of two private teams in the Transsyberia Rally 2006, Porsche launched the special model Cayenne S Transsyberia 2007 as a small series. A total of 26 pieces were built. A special Transsyberia model is also available for 2008, and these vehicles took the first six places in the rally of the same year.

The main changes compared to the production model include:

  • Increase the fording depth to 75 cm
  • Air intake at roof level
  • Off-road tires
  • Installation of a safety cage
  • Recaro bucket seats
  • Elimination of rear seats, body panels and insulation materials
  • Additional lights on the roof
  • Winch
  • Hand parking brake with a handle between the front seats instead of the foot parking brake

Ambulances and special vehicles

An ambulance version was built especially for Bulgaria. In 2007 Bulgaria ordered 32 cars of this version.

In the Porsche plants, Porsche also uses specially equipped Cayennes as safety cars, plant fire brigades, company medicine and plant security.

The Stuttgart fire brigade also has two emergency medical vehicles based on the Cayenne.

criticism

The Cayenne is criticized because of CO 2 emissions of up to 378 grams per kilometer and a peak fuel consumption of 66.7 liters per 100 kilometers (test vehicle: Cayenne Turbo S under constant full throttle ). In Norway , the Porsche Cayenne S was therefore subject to a registration tax of over 50,000 euros. In 2007 Greenpeace disguised a Cayenne as an example of a “climate pig” and protested in front of the Porsche factory gates in Stuttgart .
