The Porsche Leipzig GmbH (also: Porsche plant in Leipzig) is a 100 percent subsidiary of Dr. Ing.hc F. Porsche AG . At the site in Leipzig the be Porsche Panamera and Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo  two four-door sports sedans - - and the Porsche Macan  - a sport utility vehicle (SUV) - produced.

The plant has also been manufacturing the body of the new Bentley Continental GT since 2018 , and the Cayenne was also manufactured in Leipzig from 2002 to 2017.

history

Construction phase

In 1998, Porsche published the decision to produce the Cayenne. Since the factory in Zuffenhausen was busy with the Porsche 911 and the Porsche Boxster and there was not enough space there, Leipzig was chosen as the new production location from a total of 17 potential locations.

Developments from 2002 to 2018

The Porsche factory in Leipzig was officially inaugurated on August 20, 2002. At the opening ceremony, the then Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder , the then Prime Minister of the Free State of Saxony Georg Milbradt and the then Mayor of Leipzig Wolfgang Tiefensee took part. The first Cayenne was completed a month later. The Carrera GT was also manufactured in Leipzig from August 2003 to May 2006. 

With the development of the Panamera in 2006, construction work began on a new 25,000 square meter production hall. At the same time, a 23,500 square meter logistics center was built to provide the components and groups for Panamera production. In spring 2008, test operations of the new Panamera production systems began with the assembly of the first prototype. In 2009 Porsche Leipzig GmbH employed more than 500 people for the first time. At the beginning of 2009, the 250,000th Cayenne was manufactured in the Leipzig plant. There was also a German premiere with the delivery of the first Cayenne Diesel. Production of the Panamera started in April 2009.

For the newly introduced Macan model, construction began in October 2011 on two new production halls with a body shop and paint shop. The former assembly plant became a full plant. The new factory went into operation in February 2014. The then Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel and Stanislaw Tillich , then Prime Minister of the Free State of Saxony, took part in the opening . The new factory also increased the number of employees: In 2014, Porsche Leipzig GmbH employed around 3,000 people.

In March 2014, the decision was made to relocate the entire production of the Panamera to Leipzig, and the first pre-series vehicles were completed at the end of 2015. In addition to the body shop for the Panamera, a logistics center was also built. The new quality center was opened in June 2016. In spring 2016, construction work began on a new training center in Leipzig. A training workshop as well as several training, teaching and social rooms have been created on a total area of ​​2,300 square meters. Apprenticeships at Porsche Leipzig are automotive mechatronics technicians, mechatronics technicians and industrial mechanics. The new training center was opened in April 2017.

The last Cayenne was manufactured in Leipzig on December 12, 2017. The new generation is completed in Volkswagen - plant in Bratislava made. Since February 15, 2018, no more vehicles with diesel engines have been manufactured.

Negative price 2012

Because of the application for state subsidies for the expansion of the Leipzig luxury car plant in the amount of 44 million euros, Porsche received the tax from the Association of Taxpayers Saxony e. V. awarded negative price Schleudersachse . The former Porsche boss Wendelin Wiedeking, on the other hand, waived funding on the grounds that luxury and support did not go together. The EU also questioned the subsidies requested.

The customer center of the Porsche factory in Leipzig is used for events of various types and sizes on the factory premises. Every year around 2,000 factory collections are made at Porsche in Leipzig. The customers receive a vehicle instruction.

The shape of the customer center is similar to that of a diamond and basically consists of a base made of layered concrete and a conical 32-meter-high tower clad with metal panels . The design of the customer center comes from the architects von Gerkan, Marg and Partner (gmp) from Berlin . The basic components are concrete , steel and glass . 76 columns anchored 15 meters deep in the ground support the distinctive building, which can be seen from afar. Run-in and test track

The design of the run-in and test track at the Porsche factory in Leipzig comes from Hermann Tilke , racing driver and designer of several Formula 1 courses, for example in Malaysia or Bahrain, and combines ten major curves on well-known race tracks. Off-road course

The six-kilometer cross-country course leads through a former military training area. A total of 15 terrain modules, such as a 100 meter long and 0.5 meter deep water passage or an extreme ramp with an 80% gradient, can be driven on. Specifically, these are gravel route, sand route, tree trunk simulation, extreme ramp, trench crossing, stone stairs, forest passage, sloping slope railway, wall crossing, bunker crossings, earth route, hilly landscape with armored bridge, mud path, stick dam and water passage.
