The Circuit de Monaco street circuit is a temporary race track in the Monte Carlo and La Condamine districts of Monaco . Every year, numerous streets of the city are cordoned off and freed from traffic signs and flower pots for the Formula 1 race in Monaco . Pit lane , crash barriers, mobile curbs , fences and extensive grandstands designed as so-called flying structures complete the 3.337 kilometer long race track. The race track is now also used for the two-year Grand Prix de Monaco Historique , and on May 9, 2015, the Monaco ePrix took place for the first time as part of the FIA Formula E Championship on a shortened version of the race track . In 2020 , for the first time since 1954, there will be no Monaco Grand Prix on the Circuit de Monaco. The organizers completely canceled the race in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic .

The Tour de France cycling tour started on July 4, 2009 with an individual time trial in Monaco, with part of this prologue going through the Circuit de Monaco.

Route description

As a street circuit, the circuit offers almost no run-off zones and is therefore one of the most dangerous racetracks on the Formula 1 calendar despite the rather low average speed compared to other racetracks. Former world champion Nelson Piquet compared driving on the Monaco route to “flying a helicopter in the living room”, the two-time Monaco winner David Coulthard described it as “pure madness”. The traditional course is seen as a great challenge for the drivers, a victory in Monaco as a special achievement.

Classic variant

  • The start and finish are on Boulevard Albert 1er .
  • At the junction with Rue Sainte-Dévote is the first right-hand bend (1, Sainte-Dévote).
  • From here the route goes up the Avenue d'Ostende and passes point 2, Beau Rivage
  • On the Avenue de Monte-Carlo , point 3, Massenet , is passed in a wide left-hand bend.
  • Past the famous Monte-Carlo casino, the course leads to point 4, Casino.
  • At the Place du Casino there is a right bend onto Avenue des Spélugues . Here the drivers swing to the right to avoid a jumping hill.
  • Another right bend, point 5 Mirabeau Haute .
  • It is the Avenue des Spélugues down to the hairpin 6, formerly known as Loews and Fairmont known today Grand Hotel Hairpin called. This is the slowest point and the only corner driven in first gear of all Formula 1 racetracks and requires a special steering ratio.
  • Continue on Avenue Princess Grace , one of the most expensive streets in the world for real estate
  • Points 7 and 8, a double right turn (Mirabeau Bas)
  • The street that runs along the banks of the harbor is called Boulevard Louis II and ends in the tunnel under the Fairmont Hotel (9). Drivers are exposed to a strong contrast between dark and light as they drive out of the tunnel.
  • After exiting the tunnel, the fastest part of the course follows, which turns into point 10, nouvelle chicane. The exit is point 11.
  • A short straight leads to curve 12, the relatively liquid to be traveled Tabac - named after a tobacco shop that no longer exists.
  • It follows chicane 13, named after Louis Chiron and 14, Piscine . The so-called "swimming pool curve" gained notoriety through a strange accident: Alberto Ascari crashed into the harbor basin in his Lancia in 1955 , but was rescued from the water unharmed by sailors from the shipowner Aristoteles Onassis - but lost his life four days later during a test drive.
  • Via the unnamed point 15, you continue towards the Rascasse , named after a restaurant that is named after a lionfish . There, guests can watch the race right on the guardrail and thus closer than anywhere else in Formula 1. Here the double right curve 16 leads back to the junction with the pit lane or to curves 17 and 18, now back to the Boulevard Albert 1er .

The pit lane is also a special feature. Since it was not designed as such, as is the case with permanent racetracks, it is very tight and forces the teams to compromise when it comes to housing their equipment. In addition, the pit building is located right next to the start-finish straight and the pit lane has been at its rear since 2004.

Shortened version

In the shortened version, which was used for the first time on May 9, 2015 as part of the Monaco ePrix 2015 , the route does not lead uphill after Sainte Dévote towards the casino , but parallel to the port to the area of the port chicane on avenue J. F. Kennedy . There is a hairpin bend here, after which the route is again identical to the classic course. At just 1,760 meters, the variant is only about half as long as the classic variant and the shortest route on the FIA Formula E championship calendar.
