Reports
background
After the Spanish Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with 14 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 18 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . Brawn- Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 29.5 points ahead of Red Bull- Renault and with 41.5 points ahead of Toyota .
Nick Heidfeld used KERS again . Together with the two racing cars from Ferrari and McLaren- Mercedes, five cars were on the road with the system. Red Bull-Renault started with a double diffuser for the first time .
With Fernando Alonso (twice), Jarno Trulli , Kimi Räikkönen and Lewis Hamilton (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
training
The first day of training in Monaco traditionally took place on Thursday. In the first free practice Barrichello set the fastest time in front of his compatriot Felipe Massa and Lewis Hamilton . In the second free practice session, Nico Rosberg secured his ninth training best time of the current season. World champions Hamilton and Barrichello followed in the places behind him. In the third free practice session on Saturday, Fernando Alonso set the fastest lap ahead of World Championship leader Button and Heikki Kovalainen .
Qualifying
In the first part of qualifying, world champion Hamilton interrupted qualifying with an accident in the Mirabeau . As his gearbox was damaged and replaced in the accident, the Briton had to start from the end of the field. Rosberg set the fastest time in this segment. The five drivers who were eliminated in the first part were Hamilton and both BMW Sauber and Toyota drivers. In the second part of qualifying, both Force India Mercedes drivers who had made it into the top 15 for the first time, both Toro Rosso Ferrari drivers and Nelson Piquet junior, were eliminated. The best time was set by Kimi Räikkönen , who together with second-placed Kovalainen formed a Finnish one-two lead. In the last part of qualifying, Button secured pole position ahead of Räikkönen and Barrichello and created a good starting position for the race. Button managed the curiosity in the third part, in which the Formula 1 cars are refueled, to drive faster than in the first two qualifying segments.
run
At the start Button defended his lead after his team-mate Barrichello had overtaken Raikkonen before the first corner. While both Brawn racing cars and Vettel started the race on the super soft tires, the Ferraris and Williams started with the soft tires. After the soft tires were inferior to the super soft tires at the start, the super soft tires clearly lost traction after a few laps. This difference was most evident with Vettel, who, in fourth place, held up the rest of the field and thus enabled the creation of a gap between the three leading drivers and the rest of the field. Eventually Vettel was overtaken by Rosberg.
On the tenth lap there was an accident between Buemi and Piquet in the Sainte Devote . For Buemi, the race was over on the spot, Piquet was able to drive his damaged racing car into the pit lane, but had to give up there due to excessive damage. A little later, Vettel also finished his race in the Sainte Devote . Most of the time Button led by a 15-second lead over his teammate Barrichello, who had a smaller lead over the Ferrari of Raikkonen and Massa . Massa moved into the spotlight of the stewards after he accidentally cut the Piscine chicane twice .
As the race continued, Kovalainen collided with the track barrier in the Piscine . On the last lap, Nakajima had an accident in the Mirabeau . Furthermore, Kubica retired because he had problems with his brakes. Towards the end of the race, both Ferrari drivers who, due to the regulations, contested the last section with super soft tires, developed grain on the tires and were therefore unable to catch up with the Brawn drivers. In the end Button won the race ahead of Barrichello and Raikkonen. Other points went to Massa, Webber , Rosberg, Alonso and Bourdais .
After the end of the race, Button made the headlines again: As usual, he parked his racing car in the Parc-Fermé at the beginning of the pit lane. In Monaco, however, it is customary for the first three drivers to park their vehicle on the start-finish straight in front of the Fürsten-Box. In contrast to Barrichello and Räikkönen, Button did not know anything about this specialty and had to run to the award ceremony.
