The 2010 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 16 at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo and was the sixth race of the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the Spanish Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with three points ahead of Fernando Alonso and ten points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . McLaren-Mercedes led the constructors' championship with three points ahead of Ferrari and six points ahead of Red Bull-Renault .

Vitantonio Liuzzi contested his 50th Grand Prix at the Monaco Grand Prix.

With Michael Schumacher (five times), Alonso (twice), Jarno Trulli , Lewis Hamilton and Button (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

training

In the first free practice session, which traditionally took place in Monaco on Thursday, Ferrari driver Alonso drove the fastest lap. Vettel and Robert Kubica took second and third place. In the afternoon in the second free practice session, Alonso kept the lead ahead of Nico Rosberg and Vettel. In the third free practice, Kubica took the lead from Felipe Massa and Mark Webber . Alonso, who had set the fastest lap in the first two practice sessions, damaged his car so badly in an accident at the Massenet that he was unable to take part in qualifying. He therefore started the race from the pit lane.

Qualifying

In the first part of the qualification, Massa achieved the fastest lap. In addition to Alonso, who was unable to participate in training after an accident, the HRT , Virgin and Lotus pilots were eliminated. In the second part of qualifying, Rosberg took the lead. The Toro Rosso and Sauber pilots as well as Vitali Petrow , who touched the wall in the Sainte Devote and caused a yellow phase, Adrian Sutil and Nico Hülkenberg were eliminated. In the final section, Webber secured pole position ahead of Kubica and his team-mate Vettel.

run

At the start of the Grand Prix, Webber kept the lead. Kubica, who started the race from second on the grid, was overtaken by Vettel. Was also a good start Rubens Barrichello , who had driven up from ninth to sixth place.

After the first lap, the safety car had to go out for the first time, because Williams driver Hülkenberg had an accident in the tunnel and stopped at the tunnel exit. He was unharmed. Alonso used the safety car phase, after having skipped qualifying due to an accident in third practice, from the pit lane to carry out his mandatory pit stop. On the third lap, the leader in the World Championship Button, who had not started well, had to park his car at the exit of the Sainte Devote with an overheated engine. As it turned out, a mechanic had forgotten to remove the radiator cover before starting.

After the restart of the race there were initially no changes of position. Alonso, who was at the end of the field after his early pit stop, made overtaking maneuvers and first had to overtake the slower cars of the new teams. After the first drivers had made their pit stops, Alonso found himself between Hamilton and Schumacher, who had passed Barrichello on his stop. Rosberg, who was behind Schumacher, tried to get past his team-mate with a later stop and fast laps. After it only looked like Rosberg could succeed with his strategy, he caught up with the leader Webber, who was already in the pits and at the time was not achieving as fast lap times as Rosberg. After Rosberg had completed his stop, he placed himself back on the racetrack behind Schumacher and thus initially lost the team-internal Mercedes duel against his teammate.

In the meantime, both Sauber and Virgin drivers had finished their races. Pedro de la Rosa had to give up his race with a hydraulic failure in the pits and his team-mate Kamui Kobayashi had broken down with a transmission problem. For the team it was the fourth race in which no Sauber reached the finish. For Virgin it was also the fourth race without a finish as Timo Glock had to give up the race with a suspension damage and Lucas di Grassi with a loose rear wheel.

On the 31st lap, the safety car had to go out again because Barrichello had taken off from the Massenet . The field, which was still led by Webber, moved closer together, but there was no change of position at the restart. On lap 43, the safety car had to go out onto the racetrack for the third time. This time not because of an accident or broken down car, but because a manhole cover in the Massenet had come off. At the restart, as before, there were no further changes of position and Webber took the lead again.

On the 61st lap, Heikki Kovalainen and Bruno Senna also gave up the race in the pits. On the 74th lap there was a collision between Jarno Trulli and Karun Chandhok . Trulli tried to pass Chandhok in the Rascasse and collided with the Indian. Trulli's car took off and came to a halt on the HRT car from Chandhok. The lotus narrowly missed Chandhok's head. Webber, who was about to lap the two pilots, was the first to reach the scene of the accident and narrowly avoided the bolide.

The safety car then hit the track for the fourth time and Petrov gave up at the pits. Since the danger zone could not be cleared by the end of the race, it was decided to leave the safety car on the track until the end of the race. So that the safety car did not make it onto the finish photo, it was directed into the pit lane at the end of the last lap. Schumacher took advantage of the situation and passed Alonso. However, after the end of the race, an investigation was initiated against Schumacher, as the overtaking maneuver had taken place in the safety car phase. The commissioners punished the Mercedes driver with a drive-through penalty, which is converted into a 20-second time penalty at the end of the race. Thus, the German fell back to twelfth place. Schumacher felt safe, as green flags were waved, which usually clear the route again, and his team had not told him otherwise. However, the green flags were only waved during the race because section 40.11, which states that green flags are waved as soon as the safety car pits, prescribed it, but section 40.13, which states that under the safety car at the end of the race -Conditions may not be overtaken, has been applied. The FIA announced after the race to formulate the safety car rules clear. Ironically, Schumacher's former rival Damon Hill was one of four stewards in the race.

Webber won the race with a start-finish victory and only had to hand over the fastest race lap to his team-mate Vettel, who came second. Next to the two Red Bull drivers, Kubica stood on the podium. Thus, all the pilots who took part in the ceremony used Renault engines . The other points went to Massa, Hamilton, Alonso, Rosberg, Sutil, Vitantonio Liuzzi and Sébastien Buemi . Alonso managed to move up to sixth place starting from the pit lane because of his early pit stop.

Webber took the lead in the world championship with the same number of points in front of his teammate Vettel, and Red Bull-Renault also took the lead in the constructors' championship with the double victory.
