Reports
background
The street circuit in Monaco had been modified in the run-up to the race with a new chicane in the area of the port, which lengthened the route by 14 meters and ensured slightly slower speeds in this section.
From now on Patrick Tambay also competed with a Lola THL2 with a Ford-Cosworth turbo engine , which had already been used by his teammate Alan Jones two weeks earlier at the San Marino Grand Prix . At Tyrrell , both drivers competed with the new Type 015 for the first time.
training
Ayrton Senna did not qualify for pole position for the first time this season, but for third place on the grid behind Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell . This was followed by Michele Alboreto in front of Gerhard Berger and Riccardo Patrese .
As only 20 vehicles were allowed to race on the narrow track, six drivers failed to qualify, including a Lotus driver, Johnny Dumfries .
run
Due to a short-term change to a T-Car , Jacques Laffite , who had actually qualified for sixth place on the grid, had to start the race from the back of the field.
Prost finished the first lap as the leader, ahead of Senna, Mansell, Alboreto and Keke Rosberg, who started from ninth place . There were no changes of position between these pilots during the first 15 laps. Then, however, Rosberg first overtook Alboreto and ten laps later passed Mansell.
After Prost and Senna had made their scheduled pit stops, Prost led in front of his teammate Rosberg, who completed the race without having to change tires. Senna followed before Mansell. Aided by the technically-related losses of Michele Alboreto and Gerhard Berger , came René Arnoux and Nelson Piquet on the fifth and sixth. In the 51st lap, Laffite took sixth place. The order at the top remained unchanged until the finish.
On lap 68, Martin Brundle and Patrick Tambay collided in the Mirabeau curve. Both drivers retired.
