The 1962 Monaco Grand Prix took place on June 3, 1962 on the Circuit de Monaco near Monte Carlo and was the second race of the 1962 World Cup .
Reports
background
Ferrari increased the number of its cars to four and changed the driver line-up. Phil Hill and Ricardo Rodríguez drove for the team as they did at the season opener, the Dutch Grand Prix , while Giancarlo Baghetti paused for a race. Ferrari also signed Willy Mairesse and Lorenzo Bandini for the Monaco Grand Prix. The other works teams did not change their driver pairings, but again used different cars for the drivers. Dan Gurney drove the new Porsche 804 at Porsche , Jo Bonnier the older Porsche 718 . In BRM drove Graham Hill the new BRM P57 , for Richie Ginther the new car was indeed reported, but he put the old in training and in races BRM P47 / 57 one. Cooper also retained the division of the new and old vehicles, Bruce McLaren received the Cooper T60 , Tony Maggs the Cooper T55 . The team also reported four cars to Lotus , of which the same cars were used as at the Dutch Grand Prix, with the difference that one car used a BRM engine.
In the teams with private vehicles, Ecurie Maarsbergen drove the rest of the season with regular driver Carel Godin de Beaufort . New teams were the Scuderia SSS Republica di Venezia with a Lotus 18/21 for Nino Vaccarella and the Ecurie Nationale Suisse with a Lotus 21 for Jo Siffert , who made his debut in the automobile world championship. In addition, Maurice Trintignant drove his first race of the season for the Rob Walker Racing Team , which had entered a Lotus 24 for him.
With Trintignant and Brabham, two former winners took part in the race, with the constructors Ferrari was previously victorious once, Lotus and Cooper twice each. Graham Hill was ahead of Taylor and Phil Hill in the drivers 'championship, and BRM was ahead of Lotus and Ferrari in the constructors' championship.
training
The training session was a balanced duel between many teams and showed again how nearly 1962 the field of drivers was together. Eight different teams and five different designers qualified for the first eight places on the starting grid, the time difference between third and sixth place was only a tenth of a second. Only two drivers were significantly faster than the competition, Graham Hill and Jim Clark . In this duel, Clark secured the first pole position of his career and thus began to become one of the most successful drivers in the pole position statistics. In the following years he reached a new record in this category, which was only surpassed decades later by Ayrton Senna , who, however, had more races per season available for this.
McLaren qualified third in front of Mairesse and Gurney, all three drivers drove the same time. Jack Brabham in his private Lotus qualified fifth. This was followed by two more private Lotus cars from Trintignant and Innes Ireland . The first ten starting positions were completed by Ferrari, Phil Hill started in ninth place in front of his teammate Bandini. Lola qualified his cars in midfield, starting positions eleven and twelve. Ginther, Trevor Taylor , Rodríguez and Bonnier also qualified for the Grand Prix. As only 16 vehicles were allowed for safety reasons, some drivers did not qualify for the race. Some of the factory team drivers had already been registered for the race, which meant that Taylor, Rodríguez and Bonnier were given permission to start, although the times they had set were not enough to qualify. This one was missed by Siffert, Jackie Lewis , Masten Gregory , Maggs, Beaufort and Vaccarella. Maggs was still allowed to start after Rodríguez did not start the race.
run
Immediately after the start, there was a serious accident in the Gasometer Hairpin bend in which Ginther, Trintignant, Ireland, Taylor and Gurney were involved. As a result of the accident, a wheel on Ginter's car came loose, hitting a marshal and fatally injuring him. This was the first fatal accident in the 1962 automobile world championship. The race was over for Trintignant, Gurney and Ginther, Ireland and Taylor continued, but later dropped out with technical defects. All drivers involved were uninjured. At the front, Mairesse tried to take the lead, but braked before the first corner so that Graham Hill and McLaren overtook him. Later in the lap, Mairesse spun and fell back to the end of the field. McLaren overtook Graham Hill and led the race, followed by Phil Hill, Bonnier, Bandini and Clark battling it out for third place.
In the following laps, McLaren and Graham Hill fought for first place and overtook each other several times, Graham Hill prevailed on lap seven and gained a lead over his opponent. Behind that, the duel for third place developed into a three-way battle between Phil Hill, Brabham and Clark. First both Brabham and Clark overtook Phil Hill, then Clark passed Brabham. Clark then caught up with McLaren and overtook him on lap 28, only to then attack the leading Graham Hill. But there was no change in leadership because Clark's Lotus got transmission problems and Clark fell behind. On lap 55 he gave up the race and parked his car. McLaren was thus back in second place ahead of Brabham, but the gap to Graham Hill was already 48 seconds at this point.
The decision about victory and the podium was made in the last third of the race. Phil Hill overtook Brabham on lap 76. One lap later, Brabham retired because he had an accident due to a driving error and damaged the suspension of his car. After Mairesse had an engine failure on lap 90, this also happened to the leader Graham Hill two laps later. The race was over for all three drivers, but they had driven the necessary race distance to be classified. As only five vehicles reached the finish, Graham Hill still got one point for sixth place despite the failure. McLaren took the lead, but was attacked in the final laps by Phil Hill, who came within a second. McLaren narrowly secured the second win in the automobile world championship after winning the season finale the year before, the 1961 US Grand Prix . For McLaren this was the only victory at the Monaco Grand Prix. Cooper was successful for the third and final time. After that, Cooper did not win any races for many years. It wasn't until the 1966 Mexican Grand Prix that Cooper won again.
Phil Hill finished second ahead of teammate Bandini, who took a podium for the first time in his career. Surtees was classified in fourth place, this was the first point placement for the designer Lola. Bonnier finished fifth, seven laps behind. The fastest race lap was driven by Clark.
Graham Hill retained first place in the drivers' championship because Phil Hill also had 10 points but, unlike Graham Hill, had not yet won a race. McLaren improved to third and was only one point behind the two Hills. Taylor was the new fourth in the drivers' championship ahead of Bandini. Cooper took the lead in the constructors' championship with eleven points ahead of BRM and Ferrari, who each had ten points.
