Masten Gregory (born February 29, 1932 in Kansas City , Missouri , † November 8, 1985 in Monte Argentario , Italy ) was an American automobile racing driver .
Career
Masten Gregory competed in Formula 1 and especially in sports car races from 1957 to 1965 . He was heir to an insurance company, which gave him the capital to buy racing cars. Gregory started motorsport in 1952, influenced by his brother-in-law. At first he competed in races on Jaguars ; his first international appearance was the 1000 km from Buenos Aires in 1954 . After the race he bought the victorious Ferrari and from then on also drove in Europe. In the following years he won races in Aintree and Nassau and finished on the podium in numerous other races. His greatest success in the early days of his career was winning the 1000 km of Buenos Aires in 1957 , together with Eugenio Castellotti and Luigi Musso .
After convincing in these races, a Maserati was made available to him for the 1957 World Cup . In his first race with this car, the Monaco GP, he came third. Together with two fourth places, this resulted in 6th place in the drivers' standings. In the 1958 season he also competed sporadically on Maserati, but only achieved fourth place in Italy. He achieved three victories in sports car races at the AVUS , at Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps .
His best Formula 1 year was the 1959 season , in which he finished second at the Portuguese Grand Prix and third at the Dutch Grand Prix on a Cooper-Climax . In Germany he retired while in the lead. In the following years his Formula 1 career stalled; for this he celebrated a victory in the 1000 km race on the Nürburgring in 1961 on a Maserati Tipo 61 “Birdcage” of the Camoradi team . Together with Lloyd Casner he won the race in 7: 51: 39,200 hours with one lap ahead of the brothers Ricardo and Pedro Rodríguez in a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa .
In mid-1961 he moved to a Lotus private team, where he stayed for the next two years. With the inferior material only scored one World Championship point (6th place at the US Grand Prix in 1962 ) except for a victory in a non-World Championship race in Karlskoga ( Sweden ). At the end of the 1963 season he competed for two Grands Prix on Lola , but retired both times.
Gregory paused for a year, and returned in 1965. When 500-mile race from Indianapolis he tried his first time this year. Starting from the rear, he had worked his way up to fifth when an engine problem threw him out of the race. Just a few weeks later, he and Jochen Rindt won the Le Mans 24-hour race in a NART Ferrari . He ended his Formula 1 career after a few pitiful attempts at BRM at the end of 1965, but remained active as a sports car racing driver until 1972 and achieved further good placements.
Gregory retired to Amsterdam , where he began a second career as a diamond dealer and jeweler. He was a heavy chain smoker; In 1985 he died of a heart attack at the age of 53 while on vacation in Italy.
