Reg Parnell Racing was a British motorsport team that competed in Formula 1 from 1959 to 1969 . 1961 and 1962 it was called with regard to the main sponsor Yeoman Credit Racing and Bowmaker-Yeoman Credit Racing respectively . The team was led until 1963 by the former racing driver Reginald "Reg" Parnell . It was a pure customer team , so they didn't manufacture the chassis themselves.
Team history
Before the Second World War, Reg Parnell had competed in various motor sport classes, some of them on Bugatti . After the war he took part in several Formula 1 races. Parnell was a participant in the first Formula 1 world championship run, the British Grand Prix in 1950 . He finished the race in third place for Alfa Romeo . His last Formula 1 race was the non-World Championship Grand Prix of New Zealand in January 1957, which he won.
In 1959 Parnell founded his own racing team, which made its debut in Formula 1 at the 1959 British Grand Prix . In 1961, Parnell entered into an alliance with British financial services company Yeoman Credit , who had been the main sponsor of the rival BRP team in 1959 and 1960 . Yeoman Credit backed Parnell's team in 1961 and 1962 with £ 20,000 each; in return, the racing team appeared in those years under the name Yeoman Credit Racing (1961) and Bowmaker Yeoman Credit (1962). Reg Parnell lost the financial services provider's support for the 1963 Formula 1 season. The racing team continued as a purely private team and used the name Reg Parnell Racing again from 1963. Reg Parnell died in January 1964 as a result of an operation. His son Tim Parnell , himself a former racing driver, took over the management of the racing team. Tim Parnell built up a close relationship with BRM from 1967 and made his racing team BRM's preferred customer team. The mutual trust was so great that Tim Parnell took over the management of the BRM factory team in 1970. He then stopped racing Reg Parnell Racing.
Reg Parnell Racing took part in 83 Formula 1 world championship races from 1959 to 1969, in addition there were numerous races without world championship status. The most successful year was 1962 : on the newly designed Lola Mk4 , John Surtees achieved two second places for the racing team. Surtees was also the most successful of the total of 24 pilots who competed for Reg Parnell Racing.
The vehicles
Parnell has used different chassis over the years. Initially, the team preferred Cooper vehicles . In 1962 it used a new design by Lola . Parnell was the first team to use a Lola in a Formula 1 World Championship run. After Lola ended his Formula 1 involvement, Parnell switched to Lotus vehicles . Reg Parnell Racing was the only customer team to use the "epoch-making" Lotus 25 . As a customer team, Reg Parnell Racing did not receive any championship points in the constructors' championship. As far as Parnell's drivers finished in the points in world championship races, the counters in the constructors' standings were assigned to the manufacturer who had designed the chassis used.
In the second half of 1963, Reg Parnell decided to develop his own vehicle. The reason for this was the limited competitiveness of the partially outdated customer vehicles used by the team. In addition, Parnell, like other customer teams, was dependent on the benevolence of the chassis manufacturers, who for their part maintained factory teams and competed with the privateers. Parnell commissioned the designer Les Redmond to develop his own vehicle, which was to be used in the 1964 season. It was planned that Redmond should construct a copy of the successful Lotus 25. The project ended with the unexpected death of Reg Parnell in January 1964. His son Tim, who continued the team, succeeded in taking over two former factory 25s from Lotus, so that the need for the independent construction of a 25-copy was eliminated. Redmond converted the vehicle intended for Parnell into a sports car in the course of 1964, which was used with Mike Spence in numerous sports car races.
Pilots
Over the years, several established pilots drove for Parnell, many of whom had previously competed for works teams. They included Innes Ireland, Pedro Rodríguez , Roy Salvadori and Maurice Trintignant . On the other hand, the team also repeatedly gave young drivers a chance: Chris Amon , Piers Courage and Peter Revson began their Formula 1 careers at Parnell.
