He overturned and hit the Lotus of his team-mate Graham Hill , who had had an accident a few laps earlier at the same place for the same reason. Rindt was slightly injured, Hill was uninjured. The sports commission then banned the high wing constructions.
After these accidents, Chris Amon led the race until he ran out of cooling water on lap 57 and had to park his Ferrari 312 . This paved the way for Jackie Stewart to his second win in a row.

As in 1966 and 1967, the Formula 1 field was supplemented by Formula 2 vehicles in order to be able to show the spectators more vehicles on the long route and to compensate for the expected high failure rate. On the Friday afternoon before the race, Gerhard Mitter had a fatal accident at the Schwedenkreuz in his BMW F269 . The team withdrew their Formula 2 cars from the start. The cause of the accident was probably an incorrectly installed steering.
In training, a Formula 1 car undercut the 8-minute limit for the first time.
The Formula 1 race was marked by a duel between Jackie Stewart and Jacky Ickx , which Ickx won in Brabham . Vic Elford had a serious accident and was out for the rest of the season due to a complicated broken arm. The Formula 2 race was won by Henri Pescarolo ahead of Richard Attwood and Kurt Ahrens .

The race in which Jochen Rindt achieved his first of a total of six Grand Prix victories was only finished by seven of the 18 vehicles that started. This resulted in the lowest arrival rate in the longest race of the season. Among other things, an oil pipe burst on Stewart's Matra on lap 31 and Graham Hill had a serious accident towards the end of the race. His Lotus overturned several times after a puncture, causing Hill, who was not buckled up and thrown from the vehicle, to suffer complicated broken legs.
