The 2001 Formula 1 World Championship was the 52nd season of the Formula 1 World Championship . It was held over 17 races from March 4, 2001 to October 14, 2001. Michael Schumacher and Ferrari defended both world championship titles.

Changes in 2001

Regulations

Surprisingly, the FIA ​​allowed the use of traction control again from the start of the season and of launch control and automatic transmissions from the Spanish Grand Prix . The corresponding technologies had previously been banned for the 1994 season, and in the period that followed there were repeated accusations against individual teams that they were still secretly using such aids. In addition, the use of beryllium compounds in the construction of vehicles and engines was banned and it was stipulated that rear wings could only consist of three segments.

Racetracks

The grand prizes and circuits remained unchanged in 2001, but there were some changes to the racing calendar. The Malaysian Grand Prix was moved to the early phase of the season after two events at the end of the season, so the Japanese Grand Prix got its place back as the season finale. The Great Britain Grand Prix has also been moved from spring to summer. In return, the Austrian Grand Prix moved back from high to early summer, while the European Grand Prix was postponed by a good month.

Teams

There were no external changes in the racing stables. Even the Benetton team, which had been taken over by Renault the previous year , competed under its old name one last year.

Engines

After the use of Peugeot engines had noticeably less success in recent years and the 2000 season was finally a complete disappointment, Prost gave up this manufacturer and instead - after mediation by Jean Todt - purchased customer engines from Ferrari , similar to Sauber , which after the Team sponsor Acer were reported under whose name.

Renault developed its own engines for its Benetton team, which also appeared as Renault. However, customer engines like those from Mecachrome or Supertec were no longer available. This affected the Arrows team, which instead turned to the Peugeot engines that Prost had given up and had them further developed by a company called Asiatech .

Honda withdrew its subsidiary Mugen from Formula 1 and instead was only involved in Formula 1 under its own responsibility. Accordingly, the Jordan team previously equipped by Mugen was now forced to purchase customer engines from Honda and thus found themselves in competition with the factory-supported BAR team.

Minardi continued to rely on a self-developed Ford engine, but this time it was reported under the name European after the airline European Aviation Air Charter operated by team owner Paul Stoddart .

tires

After two seasons in which Bridgestone had a monopoly on Formula 1 tires, a competitor, Michelin , entered the competition. Williams, Benetton, Jaguar , Minardi and Prost decided to use Michelin tires .

driver

Ferrari, McLaren and Jordan continued to rely on their tried and tested driver pairings at the start of the season. In the rest of the field, however, there were changes.

Williams was dissatisfied with Jenson Button's performance and instead signed Juan Pablo Montoya , who won the F3000 and CART championships in 1998 and 1999 . Button switched to Benetton, the previous Benetton driver Alexander Wurz then went to McLaren as a test driver. At BAR, Olivier Panis , who in turn held the test driver position at McLaren last year, returned to racing. Ricardo Zonta , BAR regular driver in 1999 and 2000, subsequently became a test driver at Jordan.

Arrows kept Jos Verstappen and put debutant Enrique Bernoldi in the second cockpit . Pedro de la Rosa , on the other hand, initially disappeared from Formula 1 at the start of the season. Jaguar also proceeded in a similar way: Instead of Johnny Herbert , who ended his career, Luciano Burti was initially given a regular place. Unlike Bernoldi, however, Burti had already competed in the previous year, representing the sick regular driver Eddie Irvine .

Sauber repositioned itself completely. Nick Heidfeld came from Prost , and Kimi Raikkonen made her debut at the age of just 21 . The two previous Sauber drivers disappeared from Formula 1. Pedro Diniz never returned, while Mika Salo went to Toyota to prepare the team's entry into Formula 1 for the 2002 season. For Heidfeld, Prost brought the paydriver Gastón Mazzacane, who had previously worked for Minardi, into the team.

Minardi also repositioned itself completely. Instead of Mazzacane and Marc Gené , who took on test tasks for Williams, Tarso Marques , who had been with Minardi in 1996 and 1997, returned. Fernando Alonso also made his racing debut at the age of only 19 .

Driver change during the season

In contrast to previous years, the 2001 season was again characterized by many driver changes during the season. However, this concentrated on a few teams that were mainly to be found in the back of the field. In contrast, the situation at Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, Benetton, BAR and Sauber remained stable throughout the season.

The first line-up changes took place after just four races. Gastón Mazzacane no longer appeared at Prost, but was replaced by Luciano Burti. His cockpit at Jaguar was instead given to Pedro de la Rosa, who drove here until the end of the season. The next changes affected Jordan, but initially for more common reasons: Heinz-Harald Frentzen injured himself in training for the Canadian Grand Prix . Ricardo Zonta contested the race weekend for him before Frentzen returned. Three races later, however, mutual accusations of lack of success led to Frentzen's dismissal, and Zonta received another assignment at the German Grand Prix .

For the next race, the Hungarian Grand Prix , Jordan then signed Prost driver Jean Alesi . In return, Frentzen started for Prost. In an accident in the Belgian Grand Prix, Frentzen's new team-mate Luciano Burti was seriously injured and was out for the rest of the season. Tomáš Enge , who had been a Jordan test driver last year , then contested the last three races of the season for the team . For the same race in which Enge made his debut, the Italian Grand Prix , there was also a change in line-up at Minardi: Tarso Marques left the team, but now he has another paydriver with Alex Yoong .

The Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps took place on September 2, 2001 and covered a distance of 36 laps (250.831 km), which is not the normal full race distance. The race was after a collision between the Jaguar of Eddie Irvine and the cheers of Luciano Burti canceled the Brazilian in the fifth round and the subsequent accident. Burti had raced unchecked into the tire wall of the fast Blanchimont corners, which buried his car and hit Burti's helmet. During the subsequent examination of the racing driver, slight cerebral hemorrhages and a severe concussion were found.
