training

In the first free practice session, Jarno Trulli ( Jordan-Honda ) set the fastest time, followed by Michael Schumacher and Barrichello (both Ferrari). In the second free practice, Barrichello was the fastest. Ralf Schumacher ( Williams-BMW ) was second fastest, followed by Mika Häkkinen (McLaren-Mercedes).

Qualifying

Michael Schumacher secured pole position in qualifying. His team-mate Barrichello set the second fastest time, followed by Ralf Schumacher.

Warm up

In the warm-up, Rubens Barrichello was more than a second faster than the second fastest David Coulthard. The third fastest time was Jarno Trulli.

run

Michael Schumacher started the race in the T-Car because he strayed off the track in his Ferrari during the warm-up.

In the warm-up lap , Heinz-Harald Frentzen was unusually slow, so that everyone overtook him and he had to start the race from behind. The cause of his problem was a computer glitch. When all the vehicles were supposed to get into their starting position, Giancarlo Fisichella caused the start to be aborted by not taking his starting position properly. The aborted start shortened the race by one lap and Frentzen was able to return to 9th position on the grid. At the start of the new introductory round, Juan Pablo Montoya stopped. However, he switched to the replacement vehicle quickly enough to be allowed to start from the pit lane.

Michael Schumacher got off well at the start and defended his lead without any problems. His teammate Rubens Barrichello, however, had difficulties. Ralf Schumacher placed himself to the left of Barrichello and both turned into the first corner next to each other. Barrichello touched Ralf Schumacher, who was driving on the outside lane, and he turned as a result. Ralf Schumacher was able to resume the race at the end of the field. All other drivers got through the first corner without any major problems. Kimi Räikkönen's Sauber rolled a few meters after the start due to damage to the drive.

After the first lap, Michael Schumacher was leading in front of Rubens Barrichello, followed by Jarno Trulli, David Coulthard, Heinz Harald Frentzen and Jos Verstappen .

On the second lap, Olivier Panis , who was in ninth place, had to end his race early due to an engine failure after he spun into the gravel on the oil lost from his engine. On the third lap, the two leading Ferrari drivers slipped on this oil trail and lost several positions. Meanwhile it also started to rain.

On the fourth lap the rain intensified so much that all drivers had to come to the pits to change their tires. Many drivers spun on the track because they had to finish their lap on dry tires. In order to lead the field safely around the course, the race management decided to send out the safety car . Most of the field opted for the rain tires, whereas Ferrari opted for the intermediates . The pit stop of Barrichello took over a minute, because you had not prepared are the tires and large amounts of gravel were removed from the boxes, because Barrichello had previously been off the track. Behind it, Michael Schumacher was waiting for his tire change, which then only took eight seconds. Jacques Villeneuve , Nick Heidfeld , Enrique Bernoldi , Juan Pablo Montoya and Eddie Irvine did not finish the third lap because they spun off the track in the heavy rain.

After the field behind the safety car had been sorted again, Coulthard was leading in front of Frentzen, Verstappen, Häkkinen, Trulli, Jean Alesi , Fisichella, Ralf Schumacher, Gastón Mazzacane , Barrichello and Schumacher. The rain had stopped in the meantime.

The restart then took place on lap ten. Jos Verstappen overtook Heinz-Harald Frentzen on the first lap. The two Ferrari drivers made up two places each. After Verstappen, Mika Häkkinen also overtook Heinz-Harald Frentzen, who was now in fourth place. The Ferrari intermediates were ideal for these conditions and they worked their way forward. Michael Schumacher got along best with the tires, so he overtook Barrichello. The route, which continued to dry out, increased the advantage of the intermediates, so that Michael Schumacher passed David Coulthard on lap 15.

At the first scheduled pit stops, the drivers switched back to dry tires. After his pit stop, Mika Häkkinen had dropped to fifth behind Jos Verstappen. This stopped Häkkinen so that Ralf Schumacher caught up and could overtake both of them. When Michael Schumacher pitted, his lead was so great that he didn't lose his lead. Verstappen and Hakkinen fought a tough duel that allowed Frentzen to pass both of them at the same time in a corner. Then Frentzen also overtook Ralf Schumacher.

After Verstappen pitted, Häkkinen caught up with Ralf Schumacher, but was unable to overtake him until the end of the race.

Michael Schumacher won it ahead of his team-mate Rubens Barrichello. David Coulthard secured third place on the podium, followed by Heinz-Harald Frentzen, Ralf Schumacher and Mika Häkkinen.
