Reports

background

After the Australian Grand Prix , Fernando Alonso led the drivers' standings with four points from Felipe Massa and six points from Jenson Button . Ferrari led in the constructors' championship with 16 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 41 points ahead of Mercedes .

With Michael Schumacher (three times), Alonso (twice) and Button (once) three former winners competed for this Grand Prix.

training

In the first free practice, McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton drove the fastest lap ahead of Nico Rosberg and his team-mate Button. In the second free practice, Hamilton kept the lead. The German drivers Sebastian Vettel and Rosberg followed in second and third place . In the third free practice on Saturday, Mark Webber was the fastest driver. Hamilton was second ahead of Vettel.

In the first free practice session, Fairuz Fauzy took part in a Formula 1 weekend for the first time for Lotus-Cosworth . In addition, Paul di Resta was allowed to drive again in the first free practice session for Force India -Mercedes.

Qualifying

Fernando Alonso did not make it into the second qualifying segment due to heavy rain

The first section of qualifying took place under wet conditions. At first the top teams stayed in the box and only Vettel set a time. When they finally sent their drivers out on the track, the rain got heavier and therefore Alonso, Hamilton and Massa failed to qualify for the second part. The HRT pilots, Jarno Trulli and Lucas di Grassi were also eliminated. The fastest time was achieved by Robert Kubica . Button had to park his car after a spin. He came into the second segment, but did not start there.

This section was also characterized by the wet conditions and again the conditions got worse shortly before the end. Timo Glock , Heikki Kovalainen , Jaime Alguersuari , Sébastien Buemi , Pedro de la Rosa and Witali Petrow were eliminated. This time Vettel was the fastest pilot. The final part of qualifying was interrupted after about three minutes because the rain had gotten too heavy. After the track was opened again, Webber secured pole position with a lead of over a second . Webber was the only rider who used intermediate tires in the wet conditions. Rosberg and Vettel started the race from second and third place.

run

The best start to the Malaysian Grand Prix was achieved by Vettel, who, starting from third place, took the lead from his team-mate Webber. Rosberg was in third place ahead of Kubica. The McLaren and Ferrari drivers who started from the back of the field also got off to a good start. The quartet was led by Hamilton, who overtook a few pilots in the next few laps. His teammate Button initially fell back to the end of the quartet. On the fifth lap there was a collision between Trulli and Glock in the back of the field. While Trulli could continue, the race for his former teammate was over.

Lewis Hamilton (left) in a duel with Vitaly Petrow

While the two Red Bulls pulled away at the top of Rosberg, Hamilton and Petrow clashed for ninth place. First, Hamilton passed the Renault driver after Petrow's braking . However, Petrov countered and sat back in front of Hamilton. One lap later, Hamilton attacked Petrow again, this time finally overtaking him at the end of the straight. Since Hamilton changed lanes several times during his duel with Petrow, he was shown the black and white flag , which means a warning. Two laps later, the second McLaren driver, Button, also improved his position with an overtaking maneuver against Alonso.

After Kamui Kobayashi rolled out on the ninth lap, the race for the Sauber team was over, as his team-mate de la Rosa had already dropped out on the grid on the lap. Both suffered engine failure caused by a problem in the pneumatic system. One lap later, Schumacher had to give up the race due to a technical defect. On the twelfth lap there was another collision between two pilots of the new teams. Kovalainen collided with di Grassi. While di Grassi was able to continue, Kovalainen first had to make a repair stop and at the end of the race he crossed the finish line ten laps behind and was not classified. Another incident on the twelfth lap was the technical failure of Vitantonio Liuzzi .

The pit stops of the leading group did not change the ranking. Vettel kept the lead in front of Webber, who only got a bigger deficit due to a bad pit stop. Between the two drivers was Hamilton, who, like the Ferrari drivers and di Grassi, had not yet pitted. On lap 33, the race was over for Petrov, who also retired due to a technical defect. After Hamilton and the Ferrari drivers had completed their pit stop, they finished sixth to ninth, led by the McLaren duo. At the top, the Red Bull Renault drivers extended their lead over the rest of the field.

The winner Sebastian Vettel after the finish

On the 44th lap, Massa overtook Button and took seventh place. Alonso also tried to get past Button, but couldn't. With two laps to go, Alonso, who complained about problems with the clutch and transmission for the entire race, dropped out with an engine failure.

In the end, Vettel won the race in front of his team-mate Webber and thus ensured a double victory for Red Bull-Renault. Rosberg, who drove an unspectacular but flawless race, crossed the finish line in third place. He achieved the first podium for the Mercedes works team since the 1955 Italian Grand Prix . Kubica was able to achieve a good position with a fourth place. Adrian Sutil defended fifth place against Hamilton, Massa and Button. The other points went to Alguersuari and Nico Hülkenberg , who scored the first point of his career. Di Grassi was the first driver to finish a race for Virgin-Cosworth and was also the best driver of the newly entered teams.

The race took place under dry conditions throughout. It was cloudy and rain showers were announced during the race, but the weather forecast was wrong and the track stayed dry.

In the constructors 'world championship, Ferrari kept the lead from McLaren-Mercedes and in the drivers' world championship Massa took the lead from his team-mate Alonso. Massa led the World Cup for the first time since the 2008 French Grand Prix .

Another driver won for the fifth time in a row, Sebastian Vettel.
