Reports
background
After the Italian Grand Prix , Mark Webber led the drivers' standings with five points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and with 21 points ahead of Fernando Alonso . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with three points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 60 points ahead of Ferrari .
At Sauber-Ferrari there was a driver change in the run-up to the Grand Prix. Pedro de la Rosa was replaced by Nick Heidfeld , who last drove at the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for the previous BMW Sauber team.
One hour before the start of the first free practice, HRT-Cosworth also announced a driver change. Sakon Yamamoto was on hiatus due to alleged food poisoning. As it turned out a little later, the real reason for the exposure wasn't food poisoning, but financial difficulties. The money from Yamamoto's mother, who financed the cockpit for her son, had not reached HRT on time. Therefore, substitute pilot Christian Klien , who provided the team with sponsorship money from Austria, received the car and contested his first Grand Prix since the 2006 Italian Grand Prix .
With Timo Glock , Heidfeld, Nico Hülkenberg , Nico Rosberg , Michael Schumacher , Adrian Sutil and Sebastian Vettel , seven German drivers were at the start (29.17 percent), which set a new record.
Rubens Barrichello contested his 300th Grand Prix at the Singapore Grand Prix. Although he had already celebrated the anniversary two races earlier, since he had not started two races in the 2002 season , he had only completed 300 races after the Singapore Grand Prix. Glock contested his 50th Grand Prix.
With Alonso and Hamilton (once each), both former winners competed at this Grand Prix.
training
The first free training took place under drying conditions. The lap times got faster and faster during the training and Webber achieved the fastest lap ahead of Schumacher and Sutil. With Fairuz Fauzy in the Lotus-Cosworth of Jarno Trulli and Jérôme d'Ambrosio in the Virgin-Cosworth of Lucas di Grassi two test drivers took part in the first free practice session. For D'Ambrosio, it was also the first ever participation in a Grand Prix weekend. In the second free practice session, Red Bull-Renault took a one-two lead. Vettel posted the fastest time ahead of Webber and Jenson Button . In the third free practice Vettel kept the top position in front of Alonso and Hamilton.
Qualifying
The first section of qualifying had to be interrupted after nine minutes because Felipe Massa , who had not yet set time, had stopped on the track. Alonso, Massa's team-mate, set the fastest time. In addition to Massa, the HRT, Virgin and Lotus pilots were eliminated. In the second segment, Vettel achieved the fastest lap. The Force India and Toro Rosso pilots as well as Heidfeld, Witali Petrow and Hülkenberg were eliminated. In the last section, Alonso posted the fastest lap and secured pole position in front of Vettel and Hamilton.
run
Alonso maintained the lead at the start by changing lines so that Vettel couldn't drive past him. For Heidfeld, the first lap after his comeback did not go as planned, as he collided with Vitantonio Liuzzi . While Liuzzi was initially able to continue, Heidfeld had to pit to change the front wing. Shortly before Heidfeld, Massa had already pitted and his strategy was to change tires after one lap. Liuzzi stopped on the next lap with damage to the rear suspension. Since his car could not be recovered, the safety car had to go out on the track. Several pilots took the opportunity to do their mandatory pit stop. Of the five leading drivers, only Webber pitted and dropped to eleventh place.
At the restart, Alonso again retained the lead in front of Vettel and again pulled away a little from him. Webber passed Glock right after the restart, who had not yet pitted his Virgin. In the following laps he also passed Kamui Kobayashi and Schumacher. Behind Glock, on the other hand, a few vehicles gathered that did not get past him at first. After Sutil made it past, other pilots like Hulkenberg and Massa followed suit.
At the top, Vettel stayed a few seconds behind Alonso. On the rest of the field, the two extended their lead lap by lap. In the long-distance duel both drove against Webber, whose series of overtaking maneuvers ended behind Barrichello. While Alonso and Vettel had the necessary lead over Webber after several laps, the McLaren drivers were told that they had to drive faster to stay ahead of Webber. While the McLaren drivers initially pulled away from Webber, they succeeded less and less with the degrading tire and Webber kept the gap the same or shortened it. At the pit stop, Hamilton finally lost his third place and fell behind Webber. One lap after Hamilton, Alonso and Vettel also pitted. However, nothing changed in the order.
After Trulli had given up at the pits, the safety car had to go out again. The trigger was Kobayashi, who drove into the lane when driving under the grandstand. Of the following pilots, Senna did not see the stationary car and drove into the Sauber. A little later, the race was over for Senna's team-mate Klien, who was faster than Senna over the entire weekend, with technical problems.
In the safety car phase, all pilots who had not yet been in the pits completed their stop and the pilots moved together. Webber caught up with the leading pilots in third place. At the restart, the lapped Virgin pilots were between the leading duo and the other pilots. When attempting to lap, Webber did not pass Lucas di Grassi and lost time. Hamilton took the opportunity to pass his opponent. At Memorial Corner he was just ahead of Webber. When turning into the corner there was a collision between Hamilton and Webber. While Hamilton was out, Webber drove on. One lap later there was another collision between Schumacher and Heidfeld in the same corner. While Heidfeld retired after a collision with the wall, Schumacher had to pit to change his front wing.
At the front, Alonso could no longer break away from Vettel on the hard tires and the gap remained at about one second. Both drivers put the other under pressure and almost alternately drove the fastest laps and fastest times in the sector. While most of the pilots made one stop, Robert Kubica had to change tires again. With the new tires, however, he made up some positions that he had initially lost, as some of his opponents had ridden on the same tires for almost the entire race. After initially keeping a few drivers behind him, Glock had to give up the race at the pits twelve laps before the end.
While Alonso and Vettel were fighting for victory, there was a yellow phase on the start-finish straight, as Heikki Kovalainen stopped shortly after the finish line with his burning Lotus. The Finn first finished the lap and then got out of the car to extinguish it himself with a fire extinguisher.
In the end, Alonso won the race ahead of Vettel and Webber. Alonso led the race consistently, started from pole position and set the fastest lap. He thus managed the first Grand Slam of his career. Button, Rosberg, Barrichello and Kubica followed in fourth to seventh place. Rosberg had once again driven an unspectacular but effective race.
There were a few shifts in places eight to ten after the race. Initially, Sutil was in eighth place ahead of Hülkenberg and Massa. However, Sutil received a 20-second time penalty from the race stewards for shortening the route on the first lap. Thus, Hülkenberg moved up to eighth place. Massa was ninth ahead of Sutil. However, this result was not final either, as Force India protested the penalty and filed a complaint against Hulkenberg, who like Sutil had shortened the route at the beginning of the race. After Hulkenberg also received a 20-second time penalty, Force India withdrew the protest. The new eighth was Massa, who started the race from last place on the grid. Sutil was ninth and Hulkenberg tenth.
In the World Cup, Webber maintained his leadership position. Alonso improved to second place with the win. One loser of the weekend was Hamilton, who remained without points after his collision with Webber and fell back to third place. Red Bull-Renault further expanded its lead over McLaren-Mercedes among the designers.
