The 2010 Hungarian Grand Prix took place on August 1st at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród and was the twelfth race of the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
After the German Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 14 points ahead of Jenson Button and 21 points ahead of Mark Webber . McLaren-Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 28 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 92 points ahead of Ferrari .
With Michael Schumacher (four times), Hamilton (twice), Rubens Barrichello , Fernando Alonso , Button and Heikki Kovalainen (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.
The Hungarian Grand Prix was held for the 25th time in 2010 as part of the Formula 1 World Championship. Barrichello took part in a Formula 1 weekend in Hungary for the 300th time. Since he did not start in three races, he had to wait more races for his 300th Grand Prix. Webber contested his 150th Grand Prix and his Red Bull Racing Team competed in the 100th Grand Prix.
Red Bull came to this Grand Prix without an F-shaft and Ferrari expanded it after the two Friday training sessions.
training
In the first free practice session, Red Bull-Renault determined the action. Sebastian Vettel secured the fastest time ahead of Webber and was more than a second ahead of third-placed Robert Kubica . At Force India , Paul di Resta was allowed to drive in Vitantonio Liuzzi's racing car . In the second free practice, Vettel kept the top position ahead of Alonso and Webber. In the third free practice session, Red Bull-Renault again showed a strong performance and achieved the fastest lap time with Webber, ahead of Vettel and Alonso. Webber was more than a second ahead of the first non-Red Bull driver Alonso.
Qualifying
In the first section of qualifying, Vettel achieved the fastest lap. The HRT , Virgin and Lotus pilots and Kamui Kobayashi were eliminated. In the second segment, Webber took over the management position from his teammate. The Toro Rosso and Force India pilots as well as Schumacher, Barrichello and Button were eliminated. In the final section, Vettel secured pole position with four tenths of a second ahead of his team-mate Webber. Alonso finished third, over a second behind.
Vettel thus secured the fourth pole position in a row.
run
At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Alonso had the best start from the leading group. He first passed Webber, who was starting from second place, and then tried to overtake Vettel in the first corner. However, in contrast to the last Grand Prix, Vettel maintained his leadership position and already moved away from Alonso on the first lap. Webber and Massa were behind the Ferrari driver. Fifth place initially went to Vitaly Petrow , who was allowed to compete in front of his teammate Kubica for the first time. However, Petrov was unable to defend fifth place for long and was overtaken by Hamilton after just one lap.
Jaime Alguersuari , who made his debut in Hungary a year earlier, had to retire after just one lap due to a technical problem. At the top, Vettel stood out from his pursuers lap by lap. Webber couldn't keep up with him as he couldn't overtake Alonso. He benefited from the fact that his Ferrari was faster on the straights than the Red Bull-Renault, which was otherwise clearly superior.
On lap 15, Liuzzi, who had lost part of his front wing on the racing line, caused a safety car phase that influenced the race. First of all, except for Webber, Barrichello and Trulli, all the drivers pitted. The leading Vettel managed to drive into the pit lane entrance at the last moment. Several incidents occurred in the pit lane. On the one hand, Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg lost his right rear wheel in the pit lane. The bike jumped through the pit lane and slightly injured a mechanic from the Williams team. Rosberg had to park his racing car at the end of the pit lane. Another incident occurred when Kubica was being dispatched by his Renault boxing crew and he collided with Adrian Sutil , who was about to go into his box. While the race for Sutil was over on the spot, Kubica initially drove a few more laps, but had to give up the race a little later. Both Mercedes and Renault were fined US $ 50,000 for endangering safety in the pit lane.
Behind the safety car, Webber, who was not yet in the pits, took the lead in front of Vettel and Alonso. Hamilton took fourth place from Massa, as he had to wait at the Ferrari box for his teammate to be dispatched. When the race restarted, Vettel made a mistake. While Webber pulled away from the front, Vettel, who had not yet realized that the safety car phase should end, warmed up his tires. As a result, there was a gap between Webber and Vettel, which should be considered again later in the race.
After the restart, Webber increased his lead at the front and pulled away from the rest of the field. Vettel couldn't keep up with Webber, but managed to break away from Alonso. In the 24th lap, Hamilton had to end his race with technical problems and thus enabled a Red Bull driver to take the lead in the world championship with a win. While Webber was pulling away at the top, the stewards imposed a drive-through penalty against Vettel because he had left too big a gap on Webber at the restart. Vettel did not understand why he had been punished and complained with hand signals as he drove through the pit. It was only after the race that Vettel realized what he had received the penalty for. By punishing Vettel, Alonso took second place behind Webber. Vettel came back on track in third place ahead of Massa.
The picture over the next few laps was similar to that in the early stages of the race. In first place a Red Bull driver pulled away, while the second Red Bull driver drove behind Alonso in third place and couldn't get past him. Webber extended his lead further and only completed his mandatory pit stop when he had a sufficient lead over Alonso. So Webber kept the lead even after his pit stop and increased his lead again. Vettel, on the other hand, kept catching up on Alonso in the remaining 30 laps and put him under pressure, but Vettel was unable to overtake.
While the positions at the top were distributed, there was an exciting duel between the two drivers in the back of the field with most of the races: Barrichello and Schumacher. Barrichello had delayed his pit stop for a long time and pitted about 15 laps before the end of the race. With new tires he caught up with his former team-mate Schumacher, who was in tenth place, relatively quickly. After driving a few laps behind him, he attacked him on the start-finish straight. Schumacher defended his position in a tough way, almost pushing Barrichello into the wall. In the end there was a change of position without a collision. After the race, Barrichello complained loudly about Schumacher's behavior. The commissioners gave a similar assessment of the behavior of the Mercedes driver and placed him ten places on the starting grid for the next race.
Webber won his fourth Grand Prix of the current season in Hungary and took the lead in the World Championship from Hamilton, who dropped to second place. Red Bull-Renault also overtook McLaren-Mercedes in the constructors' championship. Alonso crossed the finish line ahead of Vettel, who was third again. Massa finished fourth. Petrow and Nico Hülkenberg achieved the best results of their careers so far with fifth and sixth place. Pedro de la Rosa scored points for the first time this season, finishing seventh. The other points went to Button, Kobayashi and Barrichello.
