The 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix (officially Formula 1 Pirelli Magyar Nagydíj 2014 ) took place on July 27 at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród and was the eleventh race of the 2014 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the German Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with 14 points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 84 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 178 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 245 points ahead of Williams-Mercedes .

At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There were two DRS zones, zone one was on the start-finish straight, the measuring point was at the entrance to the finish curve. The second DRS zone was on the back straight after curve one; there was no separate measuring point for this zone. So it could happen that after an overtaking maneuver on the start-finish straight, the pilot in front was allowed to use the DRS in the second zone.

Compared to the 2013 Hungarian Grand Prix, minor changes were made to the route in several places.

In turn three, improvements were made to the guardrails, so that there was more space for a recovered car and the recovery vehicle was better protected. In the chicane, attempts were made to prevent the pilots from taking a shortcut by installing thresholds on both sides, two meters from the track. A new security fence was erected in the finish curve as well as in turns eleven and twelve.

Jules Bianchi , Pastor Maldonado (four each), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Kevin Magnussen , Adrian Sutil (two each) and Jean-Éric Vergne (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Lewis Hamilton (four times), Jenson Button (twice), Fernando Alonso and Kimi Räikkönen (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

training

Hamilton led in the first free practice before Rosberg and Raikkonen. In the second free practice, Hamilton stayed ahead of Rosberg. Sebastian Vettel was third. The first three positions remained unchanged in the third free practice.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Jean-Éric Vergne was the fastest pilot. Maldonado and Hamilton were eliminated due to technical defects without having set a time beforehand. Both failed to qualify. In addition to the two, the Caterham pilots as well as Max Chilton and Raikkonen were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Rosberg took the lead. The Sauber pilots as well as Bianchi, Romain Grosjean , Sergio Pérez and Daniil Kwjat were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. It started to rain slightly at the beginning. The drivers used slicks and immediately hit the track. Some drivers braked themselves in the first corner. Magnussen hit the tire wall. Qualifying was interrupted to recover the vehicle. Rosberg finally achieved the fastest time and thus secured pole position .

run

It had rained before the race, so the track was wet but already dried out. All drivers chose intermediate tires. Kvjat stalled his engine at the start of the warm-up lap. He was pushed into the pits, where he lined up behind Magnussen and Hamilton, who started out of the pits. Rosberg stayed in the lead at the start, Vettel fell behind Bottas and Alonso. However, he passed Alonso on the first lap while Rosberg broke away from the rest of the field. Hamilton braked himself in the third corner, turned into the run-off zone and damaged the left end plate of his front wing. In the next laps, Hamilton made up a few positions and was already in 13th place in the eighth lap.

On the eighth lap, Ericsson lost control of his car when accelerating out of the fourth corner and hit the lane. A safety car phase was triggered to recover the vehicle . At this point the first four drivers had already passed the pit lane entrance. With the exception of Magnussen, all the other drivers pitted and switched to slicks. The only exception was Button, who had a fresh set of intermediates installed, as his team was expecting another rain shower in a few minutes. Rosberg, Bottas, Vettel and Alonso followed one lap later and fell back into the field. Ricciardo took the lead in front of Button, Felipe Massa , Magnussen and Rosberg. On the lap when the safety car was supposed to pit, Grosjean turned while warming up the tires and hit the track barrier, so that the safety car phase was extended.

There were a few overtaking maneuvers during the restart. Button passed Ricciardo with the intermediates on the still damp track and was in the lead. Alonso overtook Vettel, one lap later also Rosberg and shortly afterwards Vergne. Since the track dried up quickly, Button pitted after two laps and also switched to slicks. Ricciardo thus led the race again. On the 15th lap, Nico Hülkenberg collided with his team-mate Pérez in the last corner and retired. Two laps later, Bianchi and Maldonado collided in the first corner. Both pitted for a repair stop and drove on. In the 20th lap Ricciardo was leading in front of Massa and Alonso. Behind Vergne, who was in fourth place, were Rosberg, Vettel and Hamilton with a small gap.

On lap 22, Pérez lost control of his car at the exit of the last bend, spun on the start-finish straight and hit the pit wall. The race management decided to send the safety car out onto the track again. Ricciardo, Massa and Bottas pitted. While Ricciardo stayed on the softer compound, Massa and Bottas switched to the harder tires. Alonso had taken the lead, ahead of Vergne, Rosberg, Vettel, Hamilton and Ricciardo. Before the restart, Kamui Kobayashi parked his vehicle next to the track and gave up the race.

At the restart, Alonso kept the lead over Vergne, which he expanded over the next few laps. Rosberg did not manage to overtake Vergne. So he pitted to change tires on lap 32. He stayed on the softer mix. One lap later, like Pérez, Vettel spun out of the last corner, but prevented an impact into the pit wall by a few centimeters. He lost a few positions and drove on, but had to pit a lap later to change tires due to flat brakes . Hamilton, who was now directly behind Vergne, reduced the gap and overtook him on the next lap so that he was in second place behind Alonso. Meanwhile, Rosberg overtook some drivers in midfield. In this racing phase Gutiérrez gave up the race in the pits.

Alonso pitted on lap 38 and stayed on the softer tire compound. Hamilton, who had taken the lead, followed one lap later with his pit stop and switched to the harder tire compound. Ricciardo was now in the lead from Massa, Alonso, Hamilton and Rosberg. After Massa pitted, Hamilton was instructed by Mercedes to let his team-mate Rosberg, who had the softer tire compound and should pit again, past. However, Rosberg was not within striking distance and the gap widened again shortly afterwards. Rosberg finally pitted for his last tire change without having been let past and fell back to seventh place behind Raikkonen. Ricciardo also pitted again and fell behind Alonso and Hamilton, who refused to stop. Alonso initially extended his lead over Hamilton.

While Ricciardo was catching up on the leading duo, Rosberg overtook Raikkonen and Massa with his fresher tires and benefited from a pit stop by Bottas, so that he was in fourth place and drove the fastest laps. At the front, the first three drivers moved closer and closer together. Ricciardo put Hamilton under pressure and tried for the first time on the 65th lap to drive past Hamilton on the outside of the third corner. Two laps later, Ricciardo managed the overtaking maneuver in the same place. One lap later, he overtook Alonso on the start-finish straight and took the lead with three laps to go. Rosberg caught up with Hamilton and tried to pass Hamilton in the third corner, but Hamilton managed to defend the position here.

Ricciardo eventually won the race ahead of Alonso, Hamilton and Rosberg. Massa, Raikkonen, Vettel, Bottas, Vergne and Button completed the top 10.

In the world championship, the first three positions for the drivers remained unchanged. Among the designers, Ferrari took third place again from Williams.
