Reports

background

After the Hungarian Grand Prix , Nico Rosberg led the drivers' standings with eleven points ahead of Lewis Hamilton and 71 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 174 points ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 251 points ahead of Ferrari .

At the Belgian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Medium (white) and P Zero Soft (yellow) as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There were two DRS zones, the first zone was on the Kemmel Straight and began 310 meters after the Raidillon . The measuring point was 240 meters before the entrance to the Eau Rouge curve . The measuring point for the second zone was 160 meters before the bus stop chicane , on the start-finish straight, 30 meters after the last bend, the DRS zone began.

Compared to the 2013 Belgian Grand Prix , the route has been changed slightly: a new security fence was built in La Source and a new protective wall on the left edge of the route in Pouhon . A new drainage system was also installed in Eau Rouge , 'Raidillon', Rivage , Pouhon and Blanchimont .

The FRIC system was finally banned for this Grand Prix. No racing team had used FRIC since the German Grand Prix .

There was a driver change at Caterham . Kamui Kobayashi lost his cockpit to André Lotterer . Lotterer was active as a pilot for Audi Sport Team Joest in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and for TOM’S in Super Formula in 2014 . He received approval for a one-time Formula 1 participation and canceled a start in the Super Formula for the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Lotterer first took part in a Formula 1 weekend after being a test driver at Jaguar in 2002 . He was a three-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and, after Yannick Dalmas in 1994, became the first driver to take part in a Formula 1 race as the reigning Le Mans winner. Caterham signed Lotterer because of its vast experience in changing weather conditions. Lotterer is a former winner of the WEC race in Spa-Francorchamps. Kobayashi remained employed by Caterham.

At Marussia , Max Chilton was to be replaced by test and substitute driver Alexander Rossi . It would have been Rossi's first participation in a Formula 1 race after he had already participated in some Friday training sessions. While Marussia cited contractual reasons for the move, Chilton's management stated that Chilton was volunteering so the team could sell the cockpit to generate sponsorship money. During the first free practice that Rossi contested, the team announced that Chilton would return to the cockpit for the second free practice after the contractual difficulties had been resolved.

Jules Bianchi , Pastor Maldonado (four each), Valtteri Bottas , Marcus Ericsson , Kevin Magnussen , Adrian Sutil (two each) and Jean-Éric Vergne (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Kimi Räikkönen (four times), Sebastian Vettel (twice), Felipe Massa , Hamilton and Jenson Button (once each), five former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Yves Bacquelaine (BEL), Gerd Ennser (DEU), Emanuele Pirro (ITA) and Vincenzo Spano (VEN) acted as race commissioners .

training

In the first free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time ahead of Hamilton and Fernando Alonso . In this training, Giedo van der Garde took over the Sauber from Esteban Gutiérrez and Rossi took over the Marussia from Chilton. In the second free practice, Hamilton took the lead from Rosberg. Alonso stayed third. Maldonado had an accident at the exit of the Pouhon . Vettel had an engine failure and did not take part in the training.

The third free practice took place on a drying track. Bottas was the fastest ahead of Ricciardo and Rosberg.

Qualifying

Qualifying took place in rainy weather. It consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 16 drivers reached the next part. Rosberg was the fastest. Gutiérrez parked his vehicle with a technical problem. In addition to him, the Caterham pilots as well as Chilton, Nico Hülkenberg and Maldonado were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton drove the fastest lap. The Toro Rosso pilots as well as Bianchi, Romain Grosjean , Sutil and Sergio Pérez were eliminated.

The last section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, in which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Rosberg took the lead and achieved pole position ahead of Hamilton and Vettel.

In each section, the fastest times were set on intermediates and it was possible to improve the lap time up to the end.

run

There was a technical problem with Alonso's Ferrari on the grid. His battery was not sufficiently charged, so the team, in order not to take any risks, charged the battery until shortly before the start. Since there were still mechanics on the vehicle after the second to last red traffic light had gone out, Alonso received a time penalty of five seconds. Alonso started from its original starting place. After the race he stated that he had less power available during the race and was therefore at a disadvantage in duels.

The start phase of the Grand Prix was eventful. Hamilton took the lead from Rosberg and Vettel also passed Pole-Setter Rosberg. On the Kemmel Straight, Vettel sat down in front of Hamilton, but did not manage to stay in front of him in Les Combes . Vettel drove through the run-off zone and fell behind Rosberg. Bianchi suffered a puncture in the back of the field.

In the second lap, Hamilton was attacked on the outside by Rosberg in front of Les Combes . Hamilton kept the lead, but both vehicles touched. Rosberg's front wing slit open Hamilton's left rear tire. Hamilton pitted at a slow pace to change tires and fell back to last place. Rosberg took the lead with a defective front wing. After the race, Rosberg was publicly reprimanded for this action by the team management. There were also two technical failures on the second lap: Maldonado and Lotterer parked their vehicle on the edge of the track.

On the fourth lap, Ricciardo passed Alonso in third place. Two laps later he took advantage of a driving mistake by Vettel and also overtook him. Ricciardo caught up with Rosberg who, however, pitted on lap eight and had the front wing changed. As a result, Rosberg fell behind Raikkonen, who was previously sixth and also in the pits. On this lap, Bottas passed Alonso to third place behind the Red Bull drivers. After the stop, Rosberg picked up a part of Hamilton's tire which got caught in his antenna and fluttered several laps in front of his helmet before it finally fell off.

While Ricciardo was in the pits, Bottas took the lead for one lap. Bottas then pitted and Ricciardo again led the race. Räikkönen, who had benefited from an early first stop, was in second place. Vettel, Rosberg and Bottas followed. Alonso fell behind Magnussen with his stop, where he served the five-second time penalty, and failed to drive past him for the rest of the race. While Ricciardo pulled away at the front and Raikkonen also got a lead over the pursuers, Rosberg did not manage to overtake Vettel. His wheels stopped when he tried to overtake in front of the bus stop . This driving mistake enabled Bottas to overtake him. Bottas was also unable to drive past Vettel, as Vettel's Red Bull was very fast on the straight.

On the 20th lap, Rosberg was the first driver in the leading group to pit for the second time. The early stop enabled him to overtake Raikkonen and Vettel. Rosberg was briefly involved in a duel with Button after the stop, but finally - like Raikkonen - passed Button. Ricciardo and Bottas were now in the first two positions and were again a little longer on the track. Ricciardo pitted for his last stop on lap 27, followed by Bottas one lap later. Ricciardo kept the lead during this pit stop phase. Bottas fell behind Raikkonen. Rosberg was now a few seconds behind Ricciardo. His teammate Hamilton, who drove at the bottom of the field, asked his team several times to give up. However, he first switched to fresh tires in order to be prepared for a safety car phase. Grosjean gave up during this racing phase.

Ten laps before the end of the race, Rosberg pitted again to take a final sprint with fresh tires. He quickly passed Bottas and Raikkonen to his original second position and drove the fastest race laps during this time. He reduced the gap to Ricciardo by more than two seconds per lap, but only came within four seconds of Ricciardo by the end of the race.

Behind the front there were a few more duels in the final phase. In the 40th lap, Bottas passed Raikkonen into third place. Magnussen was a long way behind, ahead of Alonso, Button and Vettel. In the 42nd lap, Vettel initially passed Button. A lap later, Magnussen pushed Alonso away in an attack in front of Les Combes . This gave Vettel the opportunity to overtake Alonso. On the last lap, Vettel also overtook Magnussen and Button passed Alonso, who had damaged his front wing in a slight collision with Vettel at La Source . After the race, Magnussen was punished for the tough duel with Alonso and received a 20-second time penalty, because of which he dropped to twelfth place. The race management also imposed two penalty points on Magnussen. Shortly before the end of the race, Hamilton and Bianchi gave up in the pits. Bianchi was still rated.

Ricciardo thus won another race ahead of Rosberg and Bottas. Raikkonen achieved his best result so far this season with fourth place and he managed to finish ahead of Alonso for the first time. The top 10 were completed by Vettel, Button, Alonso, Pérez, Daniil Kwjat and Hülkenberg. At the award ceremony and the subsequent interview with the top three winners, Rosberg was booed by the fans.

In both world championships, the first three positions remained unchanged. Rosberg extended his lead over Hamilton to 29 points, so that he would keep the lead in the world championship even after the following race.
