Pastor Rafael Maldonado Motta (born March 9, 1985 in Maracay ) is a Venezuelan racing car driver . He drove in the GP2 series from 2007 to 2010 and won the championship title in 2010. From 2011 to 2013 he started for Williams in Formula 1 , in 2014 and 2015 he competed there for Lotus .

Career

Beginnings in motorsport (1993-2006)

Maldonado, who was active in karting from 1993 to 2002, gained his first experience in formula racing in 2003 in Italy. He drove there in the Italian Formula Renault and achieved seventh place in the drivers' championship. With his Cram Competition team, he also took part in the German Formula Renault race in Oschersleben and in some races in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . After the season he won the winter series of the Italian Formula Renault. In 2004 Maldonado drove in both the Italian Formula Renault and the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. He won the Italian Formula Renault with eight wins and six pole positions in 17 starts. In the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup, he finished eighth with two wins. He also took part in two races of the Formula Renault V6 Eurocup .

In November 2004 Maldonado got the chance to test with the Formula 1 team Minardi . Team founder Giancarlo Minardi commented positively on Maldonado's performance. However, to the annoyance of Minardi, there was no change because Renault accepted Maldonado in their funding program.

In 2005 Maldonado did not drive a full season in any racing series. He made four starts in the Italian Formula 3000 with the Sighinolfi Auto Racing team and won one race. This earned him ninth place overall. He also drove in the Formula Renault 3.5 for the French racing team DAMS . After failing to slowly drive past an accident site in Monaco despite the appropriate warning flags and seriously injuring a marshal, he was banned for four races. Maldonado was therefore only allowed to start in eight races and finished 25th overall at the end of the season.

In 2006 Maldonado drove a full season in Formula Renault 3.5 with the Draco Racing team . He achieved three wins, six more podium places and five pole positions and was third in the drivers' championship at the end of the season. He was unable to win the title because he was disqualified for a technical violation after the race that had actually been won in Misano . The 15 points lost would have been enough for first place ahead of Alx Danielsson and Borja García .

GP2 series (2007-2010)

Maldonado's performance in Formula Renault 3.5 earned him the attention of the GP2 series teams. After a successful test in late 2006, he signed a contract with Trident Racing for 2007 , where he became a teammate of Kōhei Hirate . He celebrated his first victory in his fourth race in Monaco. Maldonado had to sit out the last four race weekends due to a broken collarbone . All in all, despite another podium place, it was only enough for eleventh place in the overall ranking. Maldonado also started two races in the Euroseries 3000, the former Italian Formula 3000, of which he won one.

In 2008 Maldonado moved to Piquet Sports . After Maldonado had achieved two pole positions and two podium positions in the middle of the season , including a second place in the prestigious race in Monaco, he started a race to catch up three race weekends before the end: with four podium finishes, including a victory in the sprint race in Spa-Francorchamps , in the last six races Maldonado improved to fifth place in the drivers' championship. He also took part in a Euroseries 3000 race and won it.

Maldonado in the 2009 GP2 series in Istanbul

In the 2009 season Maldonado competed for the ART Grand Prix together with the German Nico Hülkenberg . In addition, Maldonado started for his new team on three race weekends of the GP2 Asia Series season 2008/2009 , in which he shared the cockpit with his team-mate Hülkenberg. With a second place in Sepang , Maldonado took 15th place overall. In the main series, he finished the first eight races all in the points and won two races. In the further course of the season he scored points in only two other races and finished sixth overall at the end of the season. His team-mate Hulkenberg won the championship. As in previous years, Maldonado again completed a race weekend in the Euroseries 3000 and achieved another victory.

2010 Maldonado denied his fourth season in the GP2 series. As a team-mate of Luiz Razia , he starts for the Rapax team , for which he already competed in 2008 under the name Piquet Sports. After setting some best times in the tests before the season, he went into the season as one of the favorites to win the title. Having already achieved two podium finishes, he took the lead in the drivers' standings with a win at the third race weekend in Istanbul . At the following racing weekends in Valencia , Silverstone , Hockenheim , Mogyoród and Spa-Francorchamps, Maldonado won the main races and became the first GP2 driver to win six main races in a row. One race weekend before the end of the season, he secured the championship title from Sergio Pérez . Following the GP2 season, Maldonado took part in a total of four Formula 1 test days for Williams and HRT .

Formula 1 (2011-2015)

Maldonado in the Williams at the Malaysian Grand Prix

In the 2011 season, Maldonado drove as a team-mate of the experienced Rubens Barrichello for Williams in Formula 1. He replaced his former GP2 team-mate Hülkenberg at the British racing team. As a sponsor, Maldonado brought the Venezuelan state oil company Petróleos de Venezuela , which had already promoted him in the GP2 series, to Williams. At the Spanish Grand Prix , Maldonado made it into the final qualifying segment for the first time. Starting from 9th place, he reached 15th place in the race. A race later in Monaco , Maldonado came back into the third qualifying segment. In the race he was in the lead lap until a collision with Lewis Hamilton in the closing stages and was on course for points. He was eliminated and was rated 18th. In Belgium , he finally scored his only point of the season in tenth. He finished the season in 19th place overall. Internally he was defeated by Barrichello, who finished 17th with four points.

In 2012 , Maldonado played his second season for Williams. Petróleos de Venezuela also extended the sponsorship deal with Williams. In the closing stages of the first race in Australia he was sixth and thus on course for points. On the last lap, however, he turned into the barrier after a driving error. He was ranked 13th. At the Chinese Grand Prix he finally scored his first points of the season with an eighth place, which was his best result to date. At the European opener in Spain , Maldonado drove the second fastest lap behind Hamilton in qualifying. Since this was subsequently taken out of the ranking due to a violation of the regulations, Maldonado received the first starting place and thus his first pole position in Formula 1. He is the first Venezuelan to achieve a Formula 1 pole position . In the race, after losing first position to Fernando Alonso in the early stages, he managed to regain the lead in the race after a pit stop, and he kept Alonso behind him until the end. He scored his first Formula 1 victory in the 24th race. Maldonado thus became the first Venezuelan Formula 1 Grand Prix winner.

At the European Grand Prix , Maldonado was in the final phase of a duel with Hamilton for third place. In the penultimate lap, the two touched. While the race was over for Hamilton, Maldonado still finished in tenth place. However, he was given a drive-through penalty after the race and dropped to twelfth place. A race later in Great Britain , Maldonado was cautioned after a collision with Pérez. At the end of the season he finished 15th in the world championship. The win in Spain was his only podium finish. Within the team he prevailed against Bruno Senna with 45 to 31 points .

In 2013 , Maldonado stayed with Williams for another season. After missing points in the first half of the season, he scored his only point for Williams in tenth at the Hungarian Grand Prix . He finished 18th in the drivers' standings and was defeated by Valtteri Bottas within the team with one to four points.

Pastor Maldonado 2015 in the Lotus

In 2014 Maldonado moved to Lotus , where he became a team-mate of Romain Grosjean . When the permanent Formula 1 start numbers were introduced, he chose 13 and thus became the second driver in Formula 1 history to contest a race with this start number. Previously only the Mexican Moisés Solana competed with this number at the 1963 Mexican Grand Prix . After several fatal motor sport accidents in the pre-war period, the number 13 was regarded as unlucky and was generally no longer awarded. A ninth place at the US Grand Prix was Maldonado's only point placement of the season, which he finished in 16th place overall. In 2015 , Maldonado and Grosjean formed the Lotus driver duo again. Maldonado lost to his teammate with 27 to 51 points and reached 14th place in the drivers' world championship. It was his best overall result in Formula 1 to date.

Although Maldonado was under contract with Lotus until the end of the 2016 season, he announced a few weeks before the start of the season that he would not contest the 2016 season as a regular driver for the team. The reason for the premature separation were economic difficulties of his sponsor Petróleos de Venezuela.

In 2018 Maldonado will compete in the LMP2 class of the World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Personal

Maldonado is in a relationship with the singer and journalist Gabriella Tarkany. The two live in Italy.
