George Russell (born February 15, 1998 in King's Lynn ) is a British automobile racing driver . In 2011 and 2012 he was European kart champion. In 2014 he won the BRDC F4 Championship . In 2017 he became champion in the GP3 series . In 2018 he won the FIA Formula 2 Championship . He has been driving for Williams in Formula 1 since 2019 .

Career

Russell began his motorsport career in karting in 2006 , where he remained active until 2013. He won a total of 13 championships in karting. In 2011 and 2012 he won the CIK-FIA European Championship in the KF3 class. He was the first driver to defend the title in this series. In 2013 he drove in both the European and World Championships. In the world championship he was 19th, in Europe twelfth.

2014 joined Russell in the single-seater racing and was a cockpit at Lanan Racing in the BRDC F4 Championship . He scored five wins in 24 races and was on the podium a total of eleven times. In the last race of the season he decided the title duel against his teammate Arjun Maini with a win. With 483 to 480 points he was finally ahead of Maini. In addition, Russell should start for the Prema Powerteam in the Alpine Formula Renault in 2014 . However, he switched to Koiranen GP before the start of the season within the series . With a second place as the best result, he finished the season in fourth place. His teammate Nyck de Vries won the championship. In addition, Russell made two guest starts each in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup for Koiranen GP and Tech 1 Racing . He crossed the finish line once in first place. For his achievements in 2014, Russell received the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award . In addition to a bonus of 100,000 pounds sterling he received a Formula 1 -Testfahrt with McLaren .

In 2015 Russell moved to Carlin in the European Formula 3 Championship . Already at the first event in Silverstone he achieved his first victory. With five other podium finishes, he finished the season in sixth place overall. In 2016 Russell completed his second season in the European Formula 3 Championship for HitechGP . With two victories and a total of ten podium finishes, he improved to third place in the drivers' standings.

In 2017 Russell received a cockpit at the ART Grand Prix in the GP3 series . Russell won the main races in Spielberg , Silverstone , Spa-Francorchamps and Monza . With 220 to 141 points, he won the championship ahead of his teammate Jack Aitken . In addition, he was accepted into the support program of the Mercedes Formula 1 team . This engagement enabled him to work for Force India in free practice sessions at the 2017 Formula 1 World Championship .

In 2018 Russell stayed at the ART Grand Prix and switched to the FIA Formula 2 Championship together with his team-mate Aitken . At the second race weekend in Baku , Russell braked himself in the main race and thus missed his first Formula 2 victory. He finished the race in twelfth place. In the sprint race the following day, he achieved his first Formula 2 victory from twelfth place on the grid. With further victories in the main races in Barcelona , Le Castellet and Spielberg, he succeeded in taking over the overall lead from Lando Norris at the end of the sixth of twelve race weekends in Spielberg . With two more victories in the sprint races in Monza and Sochi , Russell went into the final race weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit as the leader . There he secured the championship with a victory in the main race. He finally prevailed against Norris with 287 to 219 points. With seven wins, he was also the driver who won most of the races. His team-mate Aitken finished eleventh overall with 63 points. In addition, Russell continued to be supported by Mercedes and was a substitute driver for the team in the 2018 Formula 1 World Championship .

For the 2019 Formula 1 World Championship , Russell received a regular cockpit at Williams . His teammate became Robert Kubica . He chose 63 as his permanent starting number. On his debut in Australia , he reached 16th place. In Germany he achieved his best result so far in eleventh place. He benefited from a time penalty against the two Alfa Romeo drivers. Originally, he finished the race in 13th place. At the end of the season he finished 20th and last overall and was the only driver to remain without points.

In 2020 he will have a new teammate at Williams in Nicholas Latifi . After the seventh race, he is currently in 20th place in the driver standings.
