De Vries began his motorsport career at the age of four in karting , where he was active until 2011. Among other things, he won the KF3 WSK International Series in 2008 and became a German junior kart champion . In 2009 he defended the title and also won the KF3-CIK-FIA European Championship. At the beginning of 2010, de Vries was accepted into the sponsorship program of the Formula 1 racing team McLaren and Anthony Hamilton took over his management. 2010 de Vries won the Kart World Championship for the first time . In 2011 he repeated this success and also won the KF1-WSK-Euro-Series .
In 2012 de Vries switched to formula racing . He received a cockpit in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup at R-Ace GP . In the test drives before the season, he immediately set the fastest time. De Vries achieved his first podium finish right away in his debut race in Alcañiz with a second place. In the further course of the season he managed to repeat this result on the Hungaroring . De Vries finished the season in fifth place overall and was the best driver in his team. In addition, de Vries took part in some races of the northern European Formula Renault for R-Ace GP . He managed to win in Assen . He was on the podium four times in eleven starts in the series and was tenth in the drivers' standings at the end of the season. In 2013 de Vries switched to Koiranen GP within the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup . He won one race each on the Hungaroring and the Circuit de Catalunya . He reached the podium in five races and finished the season again in fifth place in the championship. De Vries had scored 113 out of 120 points for his racing team and was significantly stronger than his teammates. In addition, de Vries took part in three Alpine Formula Renault events for Koiranen GP . He achieved two second places and was eighth in the drivers' championship. In 2014, de Vries stayed at Koiranen GP and contested his third season in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. He won six races and was on the podium in 11 of 14 races. With 254 to 124 points, he clearly prevailed in the championship against second Dennis Olsen . He also took part in the entire Alpine Formula Renault season. He won 10 out of 14 races and only missed the podium twice. With 300 to 199 points, he also won well ahead of second-placed Charles Leclerc .
In 2015 , de Vries competed for DAMS in the Formula Renault 3.5 . At the last race of the season in Jerez , he achieved his first victory. He finished the season in third place overall. With 148 to 130 points he prevailed internally against Dean Stoneman . In 2016 , de Vries switched to the GP3 series at ART Grand Prix with support from McLaren . He won two races and was on the podium five times. While his teammate Charles Leclerc won the championship, de Vries was sixth overall.
