Ma Qinghua (born December 25, 1987 in Shanghai ) is a Chinese automobile racing driver . He has been driving in the FIA Formula E Championship since 2016 .

Career

Ma started his motorsport career in 2005 in formula racing in the Asian Formula Renault Challenge. In addition, he took part in the Italian Formula 3000 for Team Astromega in the season finale of the championship in Europe. At the beginning of 2006 , Ma started for the Chinese A1GP team on the last race weekend. In the further course of the year Ma competed in six races in the northern European Formula Renault and finished 26th overall. He also made two guest starts in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup .

After a one-year break, Ma joined the series in 2008 for the fourth race weekend of the Spanish Formula 3 championship for the West-Tec team . With three points, Ma finished the season in 18th place in the championship. In 2009 Ma only took part in one race weekend of the British Formula 3 championship for Team West-Tec and finished tenth in the national class. In 2010 Ma started for Team China at the Superleague Formula racing weekend in Ordos . In 2011 Ma competed in touring car racing in the China Touring Car Championship (CTCC). He won the 1600cc class.

In 2012 he was accepted into the support program of the Formula 1 racing team HRT . In this role, Ma was used at four Friday training sessions at the 2012 Formula 1 World Championship . He made his debut at the Italian Grand Prix . Ma became the first Chinese to drive a Formula 1 car on a Grand Prix weekend. After HRT ceased racing at the end of the 2012 season, Ma moved to Caterham . He was supposed to take part in the GP2 series as a regular driver for the 2013 racing team , but was replaced by Alexander Rossi after the first event . At the start of the season he skipped the sprint race due to illness. In addition, he was a test driver for Formula 1 racing team Caterham .

In 2014 , Ma switched to touring cars at Citroën Total WTCC in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC). He participated in five out of twelve events. He won a race on his first race weekend at the Moscow Raceway . In Shanghai he finished second. He finished the season in 13th place overall. In 2015 Ma got a full-time cockpit at Citroën in the World Touring Car Championship. He won one race in Vila Real and was on the podium in five other races. He finished the season in fourth place in the world championship. He was behind his three teammates José María López , Yvan Muller and Sébastien Loeb .

Ma returned to formula racing in 2016 and competed in the last four races of the FIA Formula E Championship for Team Aguri . For the FIA Formula E Championship 2016/17 , Ma stayed in Formula E. Team Aguri had given up its starting position to the Chinese racing team Techeetah , where Ma was given a cockpit. After the third race he was replaced by Esteban Gutiérrez , at the end of the season he finished 25th overall.

In 2017/18 he became a reserve driver for the NIO Formula E team in the FIA ​​Formula E championship. At the Paris E-Prix he started as a replacement for Luca Filippi and at the New York City E-Prix as a replacement for the injured Oliver Turvey . At the end of the season he finished 23rd in the drivers' championship.
