The Marrakech E-Prix 2018 (officially: 2018 ABB FIA Formula E Marrakesh E-Prix ) took place on January 13th at the Circuit International Automobile Moulay el Hassan in Marrakech and was the third race of the 2017 FIA Formula E Championship / 18 . It was the second Marrakech E-Prix.
report
background
After the Hong Kong E-Prix , Sam Bird was leading the drivers' standings with two points ahead of Jean-Éric Vergne and six points ahead of Felix Rosenqvist . In the team standings, Mahindra Racing was three points ahead of DS Virgin and eleven points ahead of Techeetah .
This E-Prix should be the first in which the drivers do not have to spend a fixed time in the pits when changing vehicles. Before the race, the FIA announced that the minimum time that had been set before each race since the series began would no longer apply from this race onwards. After the teams expressed safety concerns about the last-minute rule change in a letter to the race stewards, it was postponed to the following E-Prix in Santiago the day before the race .
Tom Blomqvist made his FIA Formula E Championship debut with Andretti , replacing Kamui Kobayashi . After Dragon Racing was far behind at the end of the field in Hong Kong, Neel Jani announced in the run-up to the race that he would end his cooperation with the team with immediate effect. José María López replaced Jani and returned to the FIA Formula E Championship after only two races.
With Sébastien Buemi , a former winner entered this race.
Daniel Abt , Buemi and di Grassi received a so-called FANBOOST , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy. For Abt it was the twelfth FANBOOST in his career, of which the third this season. Buemi and di Grassi received the second FANBOOST this season.
training
Lucas di Grassi set the fastest time in 1: 20.310 minutes in the first free practice, ahead of Jérôme D'Ambrosio and Daniel Abt . Di Grassi and D'Ambrosio were the only drivers who used the qualifying power of 200 kW.
In the second free practice, Abt was fastest with a lap time of 1: 19.760 minutes ahead of di Grassi and Buemi.
Qualifying
Qualifying began at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 180 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW were allowed to drive. Rosenqvist was fastest with a lap time of 1: 20.117 minutes. António Félix da Costa and Nick Heidfeld did not qualify for the E-Prix after accidents on their 200 kW lap. Also Edoardo Mortara was after a spin on its 200-kW-round slower than the 110 percent time.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Buemi secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 20.355 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Bird, Rosenqvist, López and di Grassi, who ended his lap at slow speed due to a technical problem.
run
The race lasted 33 laps. At di Grassi, the inverter was replaced after the defect in the super pole . Buemi, D'Ambrosio and Turvey decided to start the race with their second car due to technical problems. Only Buemi managed to leave the pit lane in good time and take to the starting grid while his mechanics replaced the defective water pump. D'Ambrosio and Turvey started from the pit lane.
At the start, the positions at the top remained largely unchanged, only Abt overtook Nelson Piquet jr , and Vergne passed Blomqvist and Luca Filippi . Buemi was leading at the end of the first lap ahead of Bird, Rosenqvist, López, di Grassi, Alex Lynn , Abt, Piquet, Evans and Jean-Éric Vergne .
Abt attacked Lynn on the second lap, which resulted in a collision. Lynn turned and fell back to the end of the field, Abbot had to let Piquet pass again. The race stewards saw the fault with Abt and pronounced a drive-through penalty, in addition, Abt received two penalty points.
One lap later, di Grassi overtook López, who lost so much momentum that shortly afterwards Piquet and Abt also passed. There was an accident in the back of the field when Félix da Costa pushed André Lotterer , who then collided with Nicolas Prost . The Mortara driving immediately behind had to swerve into the run-off zone to prevent another collision. The race stewards punished Félix da Costa with a five-second time penalty and received two penalty points.
In the fifth lap, Evans passed López and was now in seventh place. Two laps later, di Grassi's vehicle suddenly slowed down and stopped at the edge of the track. Di Grassi succeeded in restarting the car and pitting, where he then gave up the race.
Shortly afterwards, Abbot overtook Piquet, immediately afterwards Abbot took his drive-through penalty and fell back to 15th place. López passed Evans again and was fifth, shortly afterwards Vergne also passed Evans.
On lap 15, Lotterer parked his vehicle at the edge of the track with a brake defect. Bird had a brief gearbox problem, so Rosenqvist passed him without a fight.
One lap later, Evans, Félix da Costa and Abt were the first drivers to change vehicles. At the same time, the race management announced a full course yellow in order to be able to remove Lotterer's vehicle from the danger area. All other drivers used this to change their vehicle. Evans, Félix da Costa and Abt lost around 30 seconds. At Turvey, the technical problems on his other vehicle could not be resolved, so he was eliminated.
After the vehicle changes, Buemi was ahead of Rosenqvist, Bird, Piquet, Vergne, López, Maro Engel , Heidfeld, Mortara and Blomqvist.
Rosenqvist caught up with Buemi and put him under pressure. On lap 29 he attacked Buemi and overtook him. Buemi tried to defend himself with his FANBOOST , but to his surprise it didn't work. When changing vehicles at short notice, the team had forgotten to program the FANBOOST on this vehicle before the start.
Another collision occurred in midfield when Engel attacked Heidfeld and was in turn attacked by his team-mate Mortara. Mortara damaged his rear suspension and had to give up the race shortly afterwards. Heidfeld turned and so fell behind Engel. However, the race stewards pronounced a drive-through penalty against Engel, which was converted into a 20-second time penalty. Engel fell back to 13th place and received two penalty points.
Prost, who was in ninth place, also received a drive-through penalty, which was converted into a 20-second time penalty, because he exceeded the speed limit of 50 km / h during the full course yellow . He fell back to 14th place and received three penalty points. Due to this time penalty, Prost was only left without points for the third time in 36 races of the FIA Formula E Championship. This had previously only been the case with the Beijing ePrix 2015 and the Long Beach ePrix 2016 .
Rosenqvist won the race ahead of Buemi and Bird. For Rosenqvist it was the third win of his career and the second of the season. Buemi took his first and Bird his second podium finish of the season. Piquet, Vergne, López, Heidfeld, Blomqvist, Lynn and Abt. López scored the first points for Dragon Racing this season, Blomqvist scored his first points in the FIA Formula E Championship in his first race. The additional point for the fastest race lap went to Piquet.
Rosenqvist took the lead in the overall standings ahead of Bird and Vergne. In the team standings, Mahindra extended her lead over DS Virgin and Techeetah.
