The New York City E-Prix 2018 (officially: 2018 Qatar Airways New York City E-Prix ) took place on July 14th and 15th on the New York City Formula E Circuit in New York City and was the eleventh and the fourth twelfth race of the 2017/18 FIA Formula E championship . It was the second New York City Prix and the season finale of the fourth season of the FIA Formula E Championship.

report

background

After the Zurich E-Prix , Jean-Éric Vergne led the drivers' standings with 23 points ahead of Sam Bird and 62 points ahead of Lucas di Grassi . Only Vergne and Bird had arithmetical championship chances. In the team standings, Techeetah was 33 points ahead of Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler and 62 points ahead of DS Virgin .

The route was changed compared to the previous year: Instead of a 180-degree right-hand bend at the end of the back straight, the route now turned to the left, followed by three right-hand bends with different radii. In the course of these changes, the route length increased from 1.947 km to 2.373 km.

There was a driver change before the race: At Venturi , Tom Dillmann returned to the cockpit. He replaces Edoardo Mortara again , whom he had already represented at the Berlin E-Prix . Mortara was prevented because he was competing in the DTM at the Circuit Park Zandvoort at the same time .

With Sam Bird (twice) a former winner entered this race.

Daniel Abt , Sébastien Buemi and Vergne received a so-called FANBOOST in the first race , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle once to up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy. For Abt it was the ninth and for Buemi the tenth FANBOOST this season. Vergne last received the FANBOOST at the Montreal ePrix 2017 . All three drivers also received the FANBOOST in the second race .

Race day one

training

In the first free practice, di Grassi was fastest with a lap time of 1: 13.566 minutes ahead of Sébastien Buemi and Mitch Evans . The training had to be interrupted twice: First, Nick Heidfeld had come to a stop on the track due to a driving error and triggered a traffic jam , as Daniel Abt stopped immediately behind him and the track was completely blocked. Later, after contact with the track barrier , José María López stopped in the pit lane entrance and his car had to be towed. This took several minutes. The race management then decided to extend the training by ten minutes.

In the second free practice, Evans set the fastest time in 1: 13.207 minutes ahead of Jérôme D'Ambrosio and Bird. Oliver Turvey sustained a hand injury in an accident. He was hospitalized with a suspected broken bone and was therefore unable to take part in qualifying. The team withdrew the mention of Turvey following the investigation for the race weekend.

Qualifying

Qualifying began at 11:30 a.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 170 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW were allowed to drive. Daniel Abt was fastest with a lap time of 1: 13.981 minutes. Both Techeetah pilots who had achieved faster lap times than Abt were disqualified for using more than the maximum permitted power of 200 kW. Sarrazin hit the track barrier on his 200 kW lap, and missed the 110 percent hurdle with his 170 kW lap.

The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Buemi secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 13.911 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Evans, Nicolas Prost , D'Ambrosio and Abt.

run

The race lasted 45 laps.

Di Grassi won the race ahead of Abt and Buemi. The remaining points were placed by Dillmann, Vergne, Nick Heidfeld , André Lotterer , Maro Engel , Bird and Prost. The point for the fastest lap in the top ten went to Abt.

Vergne secured the championship title in the drivers' championship for the first time with fifth place, and it was also the first time that a driver was able to secure the title before the last race. In the team championship, Audi reduced the gap to Techeetah to five points.
