The Punta del Este E-Prix 2018 (officially: 2018 CBMM Niobium Punta del Este E-Prix ) took place on March 17th on the Punta del Este Formula E racetrack in Punta del Este and was the sixth race of the FIA formula -E championship 2017/18 . It was the third Punta del Este E-Prix.

After the Mexico City E-Prix , Jean-Éric Vergne led the drivers' standings with twelve points ahead of Felix Rosenqvist and with 20 points ahead of Sam Bird . In the team standings, Techeetah was nine points ahead of Mahindra Racing and 25 points ahead of Jaguar .

With Sébastien Buemi (twice) a former winner of the race competed.

Daniel Abt , Buemi and Rosenqvist received a so-called FANBOOST , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle to up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy. It was the fourth FANBOOST for Abt and the fifth for Buemi this season. For Rosenqvist it was the second FANBOOST of his career.

Buemi was fastest in the first free practice with a lap time of 1: 14.536 minutes ahead of Mitch Evans and Lucas di Grassi .

In the second free practice, di Grassi set the fastest time in 1: 13.672 minutes ahead of Bird and Evans. The training was interrupted by Tom Blomqvist after an accident .

Qualifying

Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 170 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW were allowed to drive. Nick Heidfeld , Nelson Piquet Jr. and Nicolas Prost hit the track barriers after driving errors, none of them qualified for the E-Prix. Blomqvist and Rosenqvist also touched the barriers, but were able to finish their laps. López was disqualified because of insufficient tire pressure. Vergne was fastest with a lap time of 1: 13.672 minutes.

The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Since di Grassi, Alex Lynn and Oliver Turvey had run over or touched a traffic cone in a chicane on their Superpole lap, their lap times were canceled because they had violated the track limits . Evans was subsequently disqualified because the weight distribution of his vehicle was outside the specified parameters. The front axle had to be between 37.5 and 39.5 percent of the total weight. In this way, Vergne secured pole position and three points with a lap time of 1: 16.806 minutes, despite a driving error and a loss of more than three seconds. The other positions were occupied by di Grassi, Lynn and Turvey.

Filippi was moved three places back because he drove too fast with red flags in free practice. Blomqvist and Prost were moved back ten starting positions due to a gearbox change. To change the battery, Prost was moved back ten more positions. Since both drivers could not fully start the relocations, Blomqvist also received a five-second and Prost a ten-second penalty.

The race lasted 37 laps.

Vergne won the race ahead of di Grassi and Bird. The remaining points were placed by Evans, Rosenqvist, Lynn, Turvey, López, D'Ambrosio and Engel. The point for the fastest race lap went to López.

The first three places in the drivers' standings remained unchanged, while Vergne extended his lead. In the team standings, DS Virgin took third place from Jaguar.
